Our 13 year old dog started losing her hearing last year, and it's now gone completely. It makes me sad, but she seems to be dealing with it ok. She can sleep for hours now, whereas before she would wake up really easily, so there's a slight silver lining. I hope yours gets some good news at the vet.

I love the show, and have just started reading Wool, which I already like. Howey has a good writing style, and I think I would have gotten pulled in, even if I hadn't seen the show. But I had the same reactions as in the article to the generator upgrade: that's not how you do that. Especially if it's a "mission critical" system.

I got this recipe from my grandmother, and we've always just called it "Orange Stuff". Some folks would call this a "congealed salad", especially in the South, but I don't like that name.

    Ingredients

    1 tub of Cool Whip
1 package orange Jell-O (with sugar)
    15 oz cottage cheese
    1 small can crushed pineapple
    1 small can Mandarin oranges

    Directions

    1. Gently mix Jello-O into Cool Whip
    2. Gently mix in cottage cheese
    3. Gently mix in oranges and pineapple

Like revenge, it's best served cold.

I'm a bass player, but in 2019, I walked into a music shop in Panama City Beach and saw the guitar that I must have. It's nothing super fancy, but it spoke to me. It's a Gretsch G2622T Streamliner, in a gorgeous green, and after playing with it in the shop for half an hour, it came home with me. It's what I learned to play on, and it's still beautiful. Here are some photos, if anyone wants to see it. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1R8IGUpqYn/

I work for a major corporation (70k+ employees, worldwide). We went 100% remote in March of 2020, and last year, totally converted to a hybrid. Basically, they polled everyone about what they wanted, saying, "if you want an office, you can have one. If you don't, work where you want". I've been to my (now former) office only once in three years, and that was to bring all my stuff home last June. My company never owns real estate, they always lease, so we don't have the pressure of expensive properties sitting vacant that a lot of companies have. And we mostly have people in leadership who can adapt, and don't need to see butts in cubicles to know that work is getting done.

I had already been 80% remote before 2020, and at this point, if they ever tried to force me back into an office with any regularity, I'd have to find something else, I think. I just can't face 2+ hours a day in the car again.

Yeah, music discovery back then was a lot different than it is now. At that same hippie-dippie store, on that same trip, I also heard the album "Baka" by a band called Outback. I instantly fell in love with it, and bought the cassette, too. I went through the same cycle with it: wore it out, bought the CD, bought the mp3.

As for the documentary, I've never actually seen it. 😮️

My first experience with the internet was in 1991, when my company got a Netcom account for us to use. You would dial into Netcom, and get into a text terminal, and from there, could access all the cool stuff like Gopher, Usenet, and ftp.

Not really ambient, but my favorite Hans Zimmer album ever is "Millennium: Tribal Wisdom and the Modern World". It was the soundtrack to a documentary series of the same name, and had Zimmer writing music around recordings of tribal songs. A few of the tracks are a little rough, because the source music was, but overall, the entire record is a joy. I heard it in a hippie-dippie store in Old Towne near Kissimmee, FL, in 1993, and I bought the cassette right then. Once the cassette wore out, I bought the CD, and later, the MP3 version.

I stay barefoot around the house most of the time, just to let my feet get plenty of air, to avoid athlete's foot (which is miserable, if you've never had it). It's also cooler. I don't go out much like this, because the bottoms of my feet are still a bit tender. My grandfather never went outside barefoot, and had very tender feet. He used to joke that "stepping on a sharp shadow" was painful to him. 😂️

I just finished a great show with Matt Berry called "Toast Of London", and I'm currently on season 2 of "Are You Being Served?", which I had seen here and there on PBS, but I'm absolutely loving plowing through the whole thing.
