I still use a dedicated Garmin device rather than an just app on my phone ... I really appreciate that all it needs is power and the GPS signal.

There are a number of phone apps that work offline (for example Organic Maps and OsmAnd. All you need is a GPS signal like a natsav.

Map source is OpenStreetMap which is good is many places, in some places perhaps worse than garmin but I've found often surprisingly good coverage in rural areas, also in terms of hiking and cycling trails.

Still think having a satnav makes sense, and also a physical map!

Reminds me of this episode of a podcast called Cautionary Tales: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-reached-your-destination/id1484511465?i=1000460865439

I'm not from the US and have literally never used a cheque. Besides cash there is no other way here besides transferring the money electronically. I mean, I guess you could go to the bank but I think that if they even offer it they would just put you behind a computer to do it.

Fraud is obviously still possible and it definitely happens, but as you say there is nothing inherently wrong with electronic payments.

Not everyone is that extreme. There must be lots of people who don't feel well represented by either party.

From their perspective, I'm a fascist, nazi, commie, satanist, and convincing arguments may be outside the realm of interaction

I used Infinity for reddit and it's essentially the same. I'm sure there are still plenty of bugs but I really like it.

Open source, available on F-Droid, for now through izzysoft: https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/eu.toldi.infinityforlemmy

I used to live in Observatory, Cape Town. Loads of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops at walking distance. Student vibe with lots of people from all parts of Africa and the rest of the world, but also plenty of non-students (like me).

There's a train station which gets you to the city centre if you head north, or you can go south and head to the beach. Go far enough and you'll get here.

The not so good parts: crime, few economic opportunities, abhorrent inequality, frequent blackouts... all the "standard" South African problems. Would still happily live there though, it's a special place.

I’m curious—for any other Nebula subscribers out there—why did you initially subscribe and what’s kept you subscribed?

I dislike the way Google and other big tech companies make their money and I believe it's ultimately making the internet and the world in general a worse place. I like the concept of nebula as well as a bunch of creators on the platform and want to encourage them and help keep nebula alive.

Also it's not that expensive, especially through some promo code.

I just made a separate comment with my favourite podcasts, but if you like Darknet Diaries I think you might also like The Lazarus Heist, which is all about the hacking North Korea gets up to. Fascinating and scary.

Here are my favourites, including some British podcasts that might be new to visitors here (nor sure where most tildes users are from):

    • The Lazarus Heist (about North Korean hacking)
    • More or Less: behind the statistics (about statistics in the media)
    • Who Killed Daphne? (true crime, a journalist killed on Malta)
    • The Trojan Horse Affair (about a probably made up conspiracy in the schools in Birmingham)
    • American Scandal (quite self-explanatory)
    • British Scandal (ditto, but more comedy than American Scandal)
    • Rough Translation (from NPR, stories from around the world that hit close to home)
    • Death in Ice Valley (true crime, about an unknown woman killed in Norway)

Not much of a gamer, but I do occasionally play OpenRA. It's a modern, open source version of the original Red Alert (as well as a few other C&C games). Never had any problems playing it on Linux.
