Unfortunately this programme has been proven to have negligible impact on birth rates and we’re still leading top depopulating countries. There are also no income criteria so rich can still benefit from this money. It definitely decreased child poverty on top of economic benefits I mentioned though.

„Helicopter money” is sometimes used to describe direct money transfers like UBI or COVID-era stimulus in the US. UBI trials probably don’t focus on this kind of impact because it’s researched quite well. It’s super effective because such money is usually spent quickly and locally. You don’t even have to be a modern monetary theorist to recognise those benefits.

In 2016 where I live we have implemented quite high child support subsidy which is a quasi-UBI essentially. Classical economists were saying we’d never be able to support expenditure this high and we’d see enormous spike in inflation. Neither has materialised (until supply shock inflation due to pandemic and second invasion of Ukraine but that’s an external factor beyond control).

This is what actually happened. We’re now one of the fastest growing economies and despite doom and gloom inflation remained stable and debt to GDP ratio decreased.

There are other benefits too. If this money comes from taxing income of high earners or wealth in general, then this money is way more likely to be spent and stimulate the crap out of local economy. We want to stimulate producing actual stuff and actual services because that means more taxes and more money for public services. The rich will keep it in capital markets where we have reached the point of diminishing returns ages ago.

Disclaimer: I own a Series X and it's my first Xbox after years with Playstation.

PS5 usually performs marginally better than Series X. The fact that games usually run at same settings on both platforms suggests that devs are not optimizing for Xbox Series X because they sold so poorly. On paper Series X is a faster machine but in the end it doesn't matter to the end consumer.

One thing that Xbox beats PS5 outright is VRR. Xbox Series does 40-120hz for all games while PS5 lower bound is 48hz and has to be implemented by game developer. It's not a silver bullet for game performance but it certainly helps with many games these days.

Microsoft has been historically quite good at backwards compatibility and that extends to Xbox as well. Plenty of older games are not only playable but with significant improvements like better resolution or 60fps on previously 30fps games).

That last point is why I upgraded from PS4 Pro to Series X last year. With the recent output of games industry you have to see writing on the wall. I'm no longer pursuing the latest in gaming but enjoy older stuff that I missed. It's still fun to run some of the latest stuff too obviously since there are some good games being made still but most of those are on Xbox too anyway.

I'm not from US but this question gets asked around here as well. Many of protections you're thinking of are mandated by Visa, Mastercard etc, regardless of type of card. You can do a charge back on a debit card even though your bank might initially play dumb. That is before they are threatened with escalation to Visa / Mastercard.

In a capitalist society getting angry at this is like getting angry at weather. Premium pricing is pretty reasonable but if you want to stick it to the man subscribe via VPN through India or some other low income country.

Top 10% Millenials are slightly lagging Boomers at same age but their median was essentially flat at 0 through the entire graph. Yep, DMA is kinda similar to how some European countries defeated telecom monopolies. We forced infrastructure owners to set up wholesale distribution channels (LLU and WLR are a acronyms I didn't think I'd ever use again) which allowed others to piggyback as equals. I don't think banning competitor from your infrastructure for publically criticizing your policies would fly back then or should fly today.

They're different in rhetoric and image but the main difference is in friendliness towards EU.

They're definitely not left on the economic axis. In terms of civil rights, Civic Coalition is declaratively pro equal rights for women and lgbt people. Ultimately they have so many conservative members that new government will consists almost entirely of men. Promised abortion rights were swept away immediately after elections, the way it goes now we might change one of the harshest laws in the world to the harshest in Europe. Even civil unions that all upcoming coalition members are for (Trzecia Droga, KO, Lewica) were not put in their formal coalition agreement because minor coalition member protested and it was apparently not important enough to fight for. They've been behaving the same during their 8 year rule that ended 8 years ago.

In my book their actions put them firmly in the right, centre-right if we're generous.

Polish catholic church is also on the course for schizm, it's been mostly an arm of outgoing government and we'll see if they radicalize even more now. The church has been ignoring Vatican and won't openly defy it but they've been in a convenient positions where supposedly catholic politicians could openly criticize the pope.

I can imagine there are enough catholic communities worldwide to band together so that it doesn't look entirely silly. Having multiple popes is a long standing tradition, no reason we can't have it now.
