Sure, and I acknowledge it’s not universal. I specifically stated that it doesn’t apply to individuals. There are plenty of right wing individuals who have stated and honest preferences for free speech absolutism (then again, there are those on the left that will honestly say the same thing)

There are some specific places where it’s truly anything goes. But I’d argue that’s a minority compared to the expressed preferences of a majority of those that espouse “free speech absolutism” preferences. The majority of that crowd are on Twitter cheering Elon Musk, compared to the numbers on something like 4chan.

I just think taking “the right wing” as a whole on this issue at face value is… naive.

For people on the right wing, they're pretty open about what they want. They push for unabashed free speech spaces to let them say anything, including slurs, allow harassment of others, etc.

I disagree with this. If you think they’re being open about their desires, they have you fooled.

Look what happens when these free speech absolutists actually get a platform. They ban political speech they disagree with. Look at /r/conservative, or Twitter banning the pro-choice Ohio ad, or Parler banning users it didn’t like on the platform.

They don’t actually want free speech absolutism. That’s generally a lie they’re telling you, in order to allow them to have more control of platforms. In general, they want platforms where their speech is favored, and leftists are banned. This doesn’t apply to everyone at an individual level, but more the expressed preferences of the crowd.

So in your view is all entertainment unjustified, because it could be spent on a more worthy cause? Or are there forms of entertainment that you partake in that you think are morally worthy?

Could you write up a chart of all the movies and games you think are morally acceptable for us to spend money on?

Which specific cases are you referring to?

The cases I am/were tracking are:

    • Trump campaign lawsuit to prevent various states from certifying their election results (Trump lost at every level, including the SCOTUS)
    • Trump lawsuit against Hillary Clinton, DNC Peter Strozk, many others (Trump’s lawsuit was dismissed as frivolous, his lawyers were fined nearly $1M for bringing the case; Trump is appealing)
    • Trump lawsuit in Florida against NY AG Leticia James (Trump dropped the lawsuit 1 day after his lawyers were fined in the other case)
    • Trump “lawsuit” against GA AG filed directly with GA Supreme Court (GA Supreme Court unanimous rejected Trump’s arguments)
    • Trump defamation lawsuit against CNN (unresolved)
    • Trump “lawsuit” against DOJ to prevent them from accessing the documents in the documents case (Trump’s arguments met some success with the district court, but we’re soundly rejected by the 11th circuit)
    • NY criminal tax case against Trump Organization (guilty, Trump Organization to be dissolved)
    • Summer Zervos defamation case (lawsuit dropped)
    • Rep Swalwell’s incitement civil suit (not resolved, survived MTD)
    • Capitol Police Jan 6 civil suit (not resolved, survived MTD)
    • NY civil suit against Trump and children (not resolved)
Mary Trump fraud suit (case dismissed, appeal filed)
    • E Jean Carol defamation case I (not resolved)
    • E Jean Carol defamation case II (resolved, Trump was liable for defamation and sexual abuse)
    • NY Trump Indictment (not resolved)
    • Federal documents indictment (not resolved)
    • Federal false electors scheme (not indicted, though indictment expected imminently)
    • GA Voting Case (not indicted)

Looking at these, it certainly doesn’t look like unambiguous wins for Trump.

Honestly, it seems surprising that you could brush off a $5M civil suit result for sexual abuse as nothing. Or the criminal conviction of his organization. Or multiple criminal indictments.

Which lawsuits have I missed that you were following?

    Serviceability

I think I’d draw a small distinction between Serviceability and what framework is offering. I think the two key things offered are Upgradability and how open the platform is.

The key difference for me, is the commitment to ship future parts that will work with the platform, rather than just the ability to repair and replace existing parts.

I agree the serviceability is a small modifier, but to me upgradability is actually a huge modifier. Largely because different components in laptop age at very different rates. Being able to upgrade my CPU without having to also buy a new screen is hugely beneficial to me.

I’m happy to eat the power difference between the M2 chip in the meantime for the ability to upgrade components, whereas if it was only a promise of serviceability, I probably would have gone back to Apple already.

I think it’s definitely going to be a broader indictment that covers the fake elector scheme. I imagine more weight will be given to that than to the riot.

Honestly, the 1A jurisprudence on inciting a riot makes that… very hard to prove. I think Trump crossed even that line on Jan 6, but it’s… it’s such a high bar that his behavior barely crosses it.

However, I think conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges related to the fake elector scheme are very likely to be strong if Jack Smith has solid documentary evidence.

I’m very much looking forward to reading the indictment.

That’s helpful. I probably just need to dramatically expand my use of 2FA, and accept that email compromise is a potential vulnerability that needs to be mitigated.

Right now, I tend to still treat email compromise as a catastrophic failure that would lead to my compromise on many other accounts.

It’s hard, because there are still platforms that don’t support 2FA, that I wouldn’t want to lose in an email compromise.

While I loathe Google, the one thing I’ll grant them is a pretty strong trust in their security team and practices. They’re not perfect in this regard, but I know they’re pretty good.

I’ve been a little hesitant to move to a new email provider, since its the single account that can cause the most damage (and pretty quickly) if compromised, since most things will delegate to email to recover an account.

Where are you headed? Because I’d love to de-Google myself, but e-mail seems like the hardest one for me to move just for that one concern.

Sell TSLA to buy up a 20% stake in Twitter as part of a failed hostile take-over, then you can sell off the Twitter holdings whenever you want.

    But then Twitter said “OK”

It absolutely is. This is how the Russian political system is by design. The vast majority of the population is deliberately depoliticized, and actively avoids politics.

There's a real danger for allowing the apathy to fester and deepen. It's a mechanism to allow the political system and the powerful to target the weakest and poorest members of our society.
