I don't have any deep insight in this story, but the concept of a pig-butchering scam is quite scary. A scammer slowly builds trust with the victim and presents early investment wins in order to build up to larger investments. Eventually, the investment gains are not available to the victim, since there were never any real gains, as the entire system is a fraud and the scammer ghosts the victim.

I suspect that most people could be susceptible to such a scam, especially those who believe they are smarter than others around them or who seek the social connection and early ego boosts offered by the scammer.

I think awareness is a good thing here, as digital relationships make these sorts of scams easier to pull off.

Just a comment on the game server idea which is something I also do and really enjoy. In that case fast storage starts to become valuable, so SSD and in particular NVMe storage can really improve server performance. For most modern games, 4GB to 8GB of RAM is enough, but if you intend to host more than half a dozen friends at the same time more RAM is helpful, and the bandwidth (and latency) of your internet connection will start to matter.

I picked up Enshrouded in early access and have been absolutely loving it. The level of polish exceeds what I normally expect in a pre-release game. The world is vibrant and gorgeous and destructible and very fun to explore. The combat is great and the enemies are tough. I have finished the content, which took about 60 hours for me and I have started building. The building system is impressive with a nice array of materials for building in a voxel style. But the results look anything but blocky!

Enshrouded is already one of my favorite games of all time. I am really looking forward to the full release in the future. The developers are planning to add a lot more world to explore and I can't wait to see it!

The main airport, Taoyuan, is a ways from the Taipei main train station. About 40 to 45 min. But if you take the train there you can see plenty of fun parts of Taipei including Ximending market and Chiang Kai-shek memorial by foot. And getting around on foot is the best way to see Taipei in my opinion. Its the small street vendors that really make it shine, especially at night. So 6 hours is enough for an experience if you are quick. I don't know how to stash luggage though. You might consider hiring a driver for the 4 to 6 hours. The prices are reasonable compared to US prices and they could keep bags in the trunk.

I just tried A Highland Song on Steam and really enjoyed it. It set a novel emotional tone that is hard for me to put in words. Certainly not horror, more a combination of nostalgia, fantasy, and wonder. I found the music to be really wonderful. My first playthrough was under 3 hours but it seems designed for additional exploration with plenty of discovery in future runs. The storytelling does come partly from narrated letters during play, but also from map fragments and interesting items you discover. And from the setting itself. The narrations alone are worth it to me.

Procedural Realms is new to me as I learned about it on Tildes on a recent thread about MUDs.

But if you can get past the text interface it really scratches that cozy itch and could be considered a modern rethink of the classic MUD.

Combat, farming, crafting, building, fishing, and exploration in a chill turn-based text environment with a web interface available.

Best of all, no ads, and no payments of any kind. Just a labor of love from a clever dev who cares about his passion project.

I am not affiliated in any way but this is my new cozy game.

My suspicion is that this has a spectecular possibility of backfiring. When you attempt to remunerate good behavior in any way it tends to move the focus from the natural rewards of the behavior to the unnatural financial reward.

Reddit already has a reputation for fostering groupthink and low effort posts that are easy to agree with and in my mind this could significantly amplify those tendencies.

If one can make actual money by botting and harvesting gold from the community, the chase is on to do so.

I hope Reddit does add this to the app because I imagine it will only speed their downfall, and the sooner that happens, the sooner the communal resources will be freed up and something new, and potentially better, can form in its place.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. After reading I also felt a desire to reach out in some way to help mentor or foster growth in vulnerable young men but I realized quickly that I didn't know how to go about doing that.

I feel like I can try to be a good example, but my scope is pretty limited given my lack of sons and lack of regular interactions with young men in need of role models.

Is the Big Brother Big Sisters program the right place to look? Are there other ways to go about this kind of mentoring?

For those of you who have finished the article, can you share your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with the author as a whole? I am looking at the world a little differently now after finishing the column, which is a hefty read, but worth it in my own opinion.

I consider myself something of an AI enthusiastic and worked with machine learning for about a decade professionally. Realistically I can't offer any insight into either of your first two bullet points.

The third question is absolutely chilling to me. I can't imagine how to prevent it but it seems obvious that even with regulation at a federal level, military ai tech will be highly desireable and within reach to bad actors in the very near future. Even if it's carefully regulated and used responsibly in your home nation, what will stop Iran, or North Korea from creating autonomous drone weaponry with increasingly sophisticated ai controlling it? Misalignment of goals with most of humanity would be built into the tech when developed by a group or nation sponsering terrorism. I really don't see how to prevent this from happening globally. I just got a new phobia I think.

I have always been a gamer but so far I have installed literally zero games because the generative local models have been way more interesting.

Games on the Switch are better, despite older graphics there.
