I think the first step is having the conversation and introducing the previously unknown to those who just don't know anything about it.
I say this as a person who has been learning a lot about gender identity over the last few years. Don't assume that everyone is coming from a place of close-minded bigotry. Some of us are a little afraid of the unknown and we just aren't familiar enough with what transgender people are going through.
Educate us. Dispel the myths. Turn on the lights because we're all a little afraid of the dark.

Early tests could easily limit the understanding of gender instead of being enlightening. Also, I suspect the genetics of gender are a lot more complicated than the genes for hair color, for instance.
That said, even a limited test that showed that it's biological could really stick it to the people who think that transgender is a choice.

I always wondered why such an inefficient layout became the norm, and now I know it's because everyone was just too excited about how much better typing was than handwriting. By the time anyone got around to re-thinking the layout the train had long since left the station.

The problem is that gender might not be binary so it may never be clear enough.

As an artist trying to get better and using social media to help, the one benefit I really see is the accountability of having to post something every day. If I don't post something every day then I'm not practicing enough and if I try really hard to make something that I like that also gets likes then I'm going to put more effort into my work and if I put more effort into my artwork I'm definitely going to get better.
I'm not sure if anyone else sees it this way, but it really has made me a better artist in the last year or two since I started doing this.
Btw, I started posting on Tumblr and really didn't care if anyone followed me - it really was all about posting stuff to prove to myself that I was working on my skills. Then, a little over a month ago I felt confident enough to start an Instagram and let potentially more people see my practice work.
I'm really wondering how my rabid anti-vaccine neighbor is feeling. She has three kids who haven't been vaccinated because she believes pretty much all the myths. I'd ask her if she's planning on moving, but she hasn't been talking to me ever since we got into an argument about the science of vaccination.
