People have been trying to game search engines since search engines have existed, yet we were doing just fine. You overestimate how much this is an SEO problem.

The issue isn't that search engines are dying, it's that the web itself is dying. Or at least the old web.

Back in the day if you needed info on a topic, there'd be plenty of personal/hobby websites discussing it, a lot of forum discussions, a whole bunch of websites.. and everything was easily indexable.

Nowadays people post their stuff in few centralized places, most of which are deliberately impossible to index (facebook, instagram, discord, etc), or at least hard to index (video content on YT, tiktok, etc). Reddit is one of the few remaining websites that are very active, public and easily indexable, which is why it still yields good results.

You don't have to be the #1 viewed channel on youtube, and you shouldn't want to be.

Definitely agree. I remember watching a clip of Linus explaining why they make those stupid "person doing the :o face" thumbnails and use clickbait titles. And it basically boiled down to "we don't want to do it, but it works, so we do it"... and it's like.. dude, of course it works, we already know that. I'm sure if you bring a bunch of half-naked titty streamers to your twitch channel that would work too. The point is that you should be better than that.

I get it that it's a business, but once you start sacrificing quality to chase higher numbers you start losing credibility. If you are willing to make the thumbs/titles garbage because it brings better numbers, how do I know the info in the video also isn't garbage that's only there because it brings more $$$?

Souls-like fans have the incorrect assumption that everyone is good at playing games. I played sekiro and it was torture because I'm not great at games. I needed more than 200 attempts at the final boss. I did not feel good, I was just angry and frustrated. I only did it out of stubbornness.

That's why good games have difficulty settings. People like me who aren't great, people who are new to gaming, people with disabilities and people who straight up don't enjoy frustration, can play on normal and easy. People like you that enjoy the difficulty can play on hard.

The problem with Souls-likes isn't that they are difficult, it's that they don't have an easier option. There is no reason to not include it other than excluding regular people so that the hardcore players can feel superior to everyone else for having finished it

Also, there's compatibility concerns. Chrome has been dominating the market for many years. If you use their engine, you know websites will look fine in the new browser you are making, they've been optimized for it.

Firefox has what, 2.45% market share at this point? Even the most optimistic stats are putting it well below 10% and falling. And when you see how they are firing huge part of their staff (including the security devs ) because there's no money.. But somehow the salary of Mozilla's CEO has risen from less than 2.5 million to 5+ million in the last few years alone... You know, for doing such a good job... I don't know, why would you trust they'll have a bright future and that engine would even still be in development a decade down the line?

Chromium has google money behind it so you know it's not going anywhere. Nowadays other giants (like Microsoft) are behind it too. And yes, there is ideological concern about supporting open source instead of what slop some giant corpo is serving you... but even that argument is rather weak when you consider Chromium itself is open source, so if Google fucks too much with it we can always fork it.

I think geeks are failing to realize that non-geeks don't overly-obsess about media like geeks do and are interpreting that as lack of interest/impact, rather than what it actually is - normal people having a healthy relationship with their media.

Star Wars fans (and LOTR fans and so on) spend years in dedicated fandom spaces, over-analyzing every scene and memeing every line to oblivion, to the point of forgetting that's not normal and regular people have zero interest in doing any of that.

Both Avatar and Avatar 2 had massive cultural impact and were both beloved by their viewers. Hence why they did so well in the box office and why Avatar 3 will do well too. It's just that after watching it and discussing it, normal people moved on, instead of going to reddit to argue with some annoying twat about some scene in a movie they watched years ago.

No, it's not. Different people have different roles and are responsible for different things.

In this particular case (which names are credited), the decision is made by the actor and writer guilds for opening credits and by the producer for the end credits. This is not a decision the director is making. And even that is oversimplifying it, as there are a bunch of contractual agreements (especially with the actors) so the producer can't take them out without massive lawsuits.

Directors are most certainly not CEOs (the CEOs of those movie studios are the actual CEOs). And CEOs themselves are not the kings with unlimited power.

People want everything to be simple and straight-forward, and to have a clear person they can blame or praise. But reality is complex. Big projects like this that involve thousands upon thousands of people, there simply isn't one person who is making all the decisions.

People have been arguing for privacy for how many decades now? How has that turned out?

The truth is that the overwhelming majority of population simply doesn't care about privacy and doesn't mind their faces being scanned for age verification. Especially when you throw in the bit about doing it to "protect the children".

If you want to stop stuff like this, you need to use arguments that people are susceptible to and that have power in politics. Discrimination against race and gender is something a lot of people feel EXTREMELY passionate about and is potent in the voting poll.

You say the breach of privacy i something "every human can object to", but in your experience is that something that they actually do? Maybe in your small circle.. but in the wider world, taking selfies and sending them to Zuck is everyone's favorite past-time.

They do generate content, by paying people to do it.

That's one of the main reasons there's no viable YT competitor. Hosting is not that expensive these days, there's a reason there are so many alternatives that will gladly host your videos. They just don't get any traction - because if you don't pay Mr Beast millions he'll post them on YT instead. Because they will pay him. And not just him, countless creators have turned it into a full-time job. It takes a lot of money to fund that much content.

I'm not sure what you are arguing here. Being a premium subscriber, you weren't getting ads to begin with. Why would trying to stop ad-blocking (which only affected free users, not you) get you to cancel it? It didn't affect you at all.

Are you doing it out of principle? You can't have everything be free and with no ads, that's obviously not realistic. Especially for something heavy like video sharing, and especially if you want the creators to be paid for their work (which they should be)

    What are you planning to

If you are wealthy, hire a promoter and be prepared to spend massive amounts of money on advertising.

If you are not, try getting a label to sign your band. You'll lose a lot of creative freedom (and future income), but they will have the resources to promote you.

If you can't (or don't want to), you'll have to accept that like almost every other indie artist, your music won't be popular no matter what you do.

Taylor Swift is pop music for millennials and older. Listening to the radio is for millennials and older.

This is like listening to a metal/rock band from the 80s/90s that happens to still be active, watching their latest song on cable TV, and deciding metal music hasn't changed all that much.

If you want to see what music the next generation is into, you need to use the spaces the next generation is using. For example check out what's trending on tiktok.

That's a rather silly take. If somebody asks you "Is Zimbabwe richer than the US?" you don't reply with "Well, it depends, a homeless person in the US is poorer than the richest in Zimbabwe."

The actual answer is that the US is richer. A lot richer.

Just like the actual answer is that life is better now compared to the past. Yes, you'll find outliers, but for the overwhelming majority of people it's true. Not losing half of your children to painful disease because of modern medicine alone would drastically improve your mood I bet.

There is only one person that gets to

I mean, actual evidence shows that for the overwhelming majority of mods, the mere threat of being removed made them fold like wet paper, effectively end the protest- and indeed accept the conditions reddit was giving them.

I think there's a big discrepancy between what mods claim (that they are doing hard grueling work, with shitty tools, for no pay, poor little guys) and their actual actions - clinging to their modship like there's no tomorrow. That's just not how people work. If being a mod was so unpleasant, nobody would be clinging so strongly to it, especially since there is no pay.

From my experience interacting with reddit mods, they straight up enjoy having power over others. It gets them off. That's why they cling so strongly to it, they love having that power. And it's why reddit would never have to pay them. There's no shortage of people out there who enjoy having power over others, especially over big groups.

And now that you know about the issue, what actions are you taking to stop it?

That's the problem with slacktivism, it confuses raising awareness with actually doing something. If you don't actually do anything, you knowing about the problem is identical in practice to you not knowing about the problem. Nothing changed now that you were made aware.
