If you wake up and can't fall back asleep, play this game:

Starting from 100, each time you exhale count down by one. If you do any movement (like scratching yourself, turning, swallowing, etc.), reset the number back to 100 and start over. I tell myself that if I reach 0, I'll just get up and do something else, but to be honest that has never happened.

There's something about mechanically counting down that is enough busy work for the brain to not spiral into other thoughts, while being simple enough (and tied to a biological function, your breathing), allowing the brain to start doing it automatically eventually so you can fall asleep.

Yeah, it's entirely possible the series becomes more serious later on. It's just that I've also heard that later Halo games are not that good and the series is overall in a bad place (and has been for a while). So I kinda assumed it's the first ones I'd like the most, hence being underwhelmed.

It's probably just age. 25 years ago even games with "good story" were kinda "good for a video game". Nowadays we are spoiled with these Hollywood level productions with A-list actors motion capturing complex emotional scenes and so on.

No shit a robotic lady from 25 years ago telling me to move to the next room isn't gonna hit the same. But if I played it at the time, I'd probably have been quite impressed.

I think what happened is that the game series was too successful for its own good.

They were obviously going somewhere with Desmond and the modern-day story. It was working towards resolution and it was pretty obvious where they were going with it - a game set in modern-day, with Desmond becoming a modern-day assassin because of the bleeding effect, unraveling everything and stopping Abstergo.

But the games were so damn financially successful (and the premise of throwing people into different time periods/cultures so infinitely milkable), they didn't wanna end it. So they gave up on everything they were working towards, to create an infinite conveyor belt instead. People stopped caring about the modern-day stuff because none of it mattered, nor was it going anywhere anymore. It was just tacked-on nonsense to get you to the meat of the game.

Also, the money allowed them to keep increasing the scope/world size, leading to bloat. The first Assassin's Creed was 20 hours long, about 30 for completionist. The Viking one was 100 hours, 150 for completionist. It's ridiculous, no shit people will start abandoning the games before finishing them.

The current climate in the US is that there is very little oversight and most cops are very trigger-happy. Some because they are genuinely bad people. Some because the country literally has more guns than citizens, so they assume everyone's armed.

Drones circumvent the problem because they can stop that car jacking without anyone getting shot. From your comment you seem to dislike the police, do you seriously prefer it if an actual officer was there instead of the drone? Especially if the car-jacker is black?

In general if you experiment with new policy to improve something, and you see clear evidence of improvement (by that I mean hard data, like in this case), it's wise to continue that policy. If the policy stops working, or we get new evidence/research, the policy should be reconsidered.

But throwing away something with evidence, just because you want even more evidence, is unwise. I do agree with you more research is needed though.

I'm fine with the gameplay or QoL - I don't know how much the remake has changed, but they did well because I didn't notice any age on it. Game plays fine.

I'm underwhelmed because of the story. I expected something different, something more serious. While I've never played the halo games, I've obviously heard people talk about them. And there's always this.. reverence, like it's some epic grandiose sci-fi story that was unrivaled in the history of games. And I've heard about these cool ring worlds, and that there's ancient aliens involved, and I knew Microsoft even named their AI after the AI in the game. Everything sounded designed for me to like, so I had high expectations. To be blunt, I kinda expected Mass Effect but FPS.

Instead.. the game is kinda silly. The story just.. isn't trying very hard. It tells you "go here", "go there", but little serious characterization or drama, or anything beyond very surface-level. And the enemies are these silly little guys running at you with grenades, making funny noises... Or taller guys with ridiculous one-liners. It's silly, that's how I'd describe it.

I wouldn't say it's a bad game or anything, I'll certainly finish it. It's just... Let's just say it's no Mass Effect, lmao.

Would people be willing to pay more for the same thing (and have it delivered slower) because the order confirmation email is a bit nicer?

I get the idea that it won't be just the email, but other things too... I just think for most people it's entirely about price, and I doubt that's gonna change anytime soon considering how hard inflation has hit everyone.

I think we should avoid using the word "woke" because it means different things to different people.

If by "woke" we mean progressive/left wing, Tildes is almost certainly more so. But that's not how most people use the word. For most it's not really just about being left/progressive, it's about how those ideas are expressed.

For example, let's say we are discussing homeless people: On Tildes I'm far more likely to see unanimous opinion that the homeless need more help, support and compassion. While on reddit I get at least a few right wingers argue the poor should help themselves, complaints about them being lazy, stuff like that. In that sense, Tildes is more progressive.

But on reddit I'm also far more likely to get some angry tumblerina delete my comment, proclaim I'm a bigot because I said "homeless" instead of "unhoused" and then ban me from 17 other subreddits I didn't even participate in because I failed some arbitrary purity test. In that sense, reddit is far more "woke".

Tildes was not sold to me as being more woke, it was sold to me (correctly) as being more reasonable, and that does include the excesses on both the left and the right.

"The City and the Stars" by Arthur C Clarke.

It is an absolute page-turner of a novel, combining what I love the most about sci-fi as a genre.

It gives you a really cool setting - a futuristic city utopia, living eternally in the middle of an endless desert. With each page you want to learn more about this amazing place and how it works, and how it came to be, and all the secrets it keeps, and you wonder what's outside it, and who made it, and why... The entire novel is going on an epic adventure of discovery and wonder! At the same time, it tackles some serious philosophical questions about utopias, about identity, about change, and rules, and societal design, and cities, and how people behave, and why.

This is where sci-fi shines best - using the exploration of those amazing imaginary worlds and technologies, to tackle actual complex and interesting philosophical and moral questions.

Sekiro already has "even harder" mode for NG+ where they increase the health bar of the bosses. The code is already implemented. Having a mode decreases it a bit is not that much work. Also, additional sales to people like me can easily fund hiring a couple of extra emplyees to test it.

IMO the real reason they don't have easy/normal difficulty is marketing. They want capital G Gamers to brag about being so hardcore.

Since we have so much drama about jar opening, it's like a company deliberately designing jars that are extremely difficult to open, so they can promote them as "only real man can open these!"

Sure, they are allowed to do that and it will probably work as marketing. Not everything has to be made for me. But deliberately designing things to exclude people based on their physical limitations, for no other reason but to exclude, is IMO straight up mean.

IMO FromSoft games will benefit greatly from a difficulty setting. Different people have different skill levels. People who are good at this kind of thing can play on the highest setting and their experience will be literally identical as now. But people like me can play on a more reasonable setting and actually have fun too.

Tldr; it's not my fault, poor game design;)
