How are you feeling about what you watched this season now that the season is almost over?

feel free to share what shows you've been watching and how you feel about them! I'll share my own thoughts in response (as I don't want to center it on my own opinions)

    idolm@ster: u149 (7-8/10)

I'm idol loving trash, and this is some absolutely wonderful idol content. also, wow, talk about a premise that could only work in anime...the idea of 10 year old idols in real life is deeply creepy to me, but here it...works. you'd think it would get weird, but the show never makes it weird. it's just...delightful. it feels a lot more like the original idolm@ster than cinderella girls, and that's a strength (not that I disliked cinderella girls!). just such a little dollop of joy in my week

    yuri is my job (7/10)

I need to reflect more on why I like this show so much, but I do. messy lesbian melodrama...I think I enjoy it because the melodrama feels pretty organic, and it doesn't dwell. the show moves very quickly, so no particular point has time to get annoying. and I guess I just like gay shit

    kamikatsu (7/10)

what the hell is this show?! I went from thinking it would suck, to thinking it was so bad it's good, to just thinking it's brilliant. the production is doing a whole lot with very little. funny, weird, leans into the sorts of things that only anime can pull off...all while actually having what seems like it could be a pretty interesting story, with interesting things going on behind the scenes. this troll isekai has potentially more interesting worldbuilding than shows that take themselves 100x more seriously

    megami no cafe terrace (7/10)

this is definitely not a better show than skip to loafer, heavenly delusion, etc. it's a fair by the books harem...but better? first off, the ML is refreshing: he's not a pushover! he's not an idiot! he's not a jerk! he has things going for him and he challenges the women and cares for them. it's nice! and the girls are all pretty sexy, my only complaint really is that some of the girls don't get much time, and the show is merely ok at developing them and their backstories. also some very good shots of ami in spats, that's worth at least half a point or more. I really hope we see more harem MLs like this...MLs where you can actually imagine a human woman wanting to be with them.

    my clueless first friend (7/10)

this is the show that by far surprised me the most this season. I thought it would be a one note show and almost dropped it, but it has been really lovely...with characters showing some real growth, and sort of being a nice low key exploration of friendship and young love

    skip to loafer (7/10)

what a lovely show, seriously. it's just such a delight. ending could bump it to an 8 if it's incredible but I doubt it's. it's just one of those shows that does a solid job doing it's thing. and wow some pretty damn good trans representation. absolutely refreshing!

    gwitch (7/10)

an intense, sometimes painful watch...interesting, intriguing, a complex host of interesting characters. I'm definitely engaged! but it hasn't really gotten itself deep into me. so it's a show that I like a lot, but don't necessarily like...deeply love

    heavenly delusion (7/10)

a very well produced show that is telling an interesting and mysterious story. it's not perfect, but I'm super interested in where it's going, even if I'm not like deeeeply invested in any particular aspect of the show. just a solid scifi show with solid characters and lots of interesting hooks. the last few episodes in particular seem to be setting things up to go in a pretty interesting direction

    birdie wing s2 (7/10)

I've established that I love messy lesbian melodrama especially when it's fun...and this certainly is that. what an absurd show. a golf epic! and it really is an epic melodrama

    jigokuraku (6-7/10)

I enjoy this show. it's doing a lot of things I like...and I really like the setting and sort of where it is going. the production itself has been...flawed, which has led to moments that could have been very hype being much less hype than they should have been. still, I'm optimistic about where they show could go but it's unclear if it will get the chance

    danger of my heart (7/10)

a very intriguing show. it has dwelled on certain things more than I like, but on the whole I think it does a pretty good job of capturing the awkwardness of young love, as well as portraying it in a compelling way. and yamada is just a lot of fun. my biggest complaint is how the show sets up its premise and then...more or less completely abandons it lol. which is fine because the show is a lovely one and I mean I can relate to how dense the ML is, but still.

    oshi no ko (7/10)

after an explosive masterpiece of a first episode, this has settled into an intriguing show. I am a patient viewer and like where things are going, I also enjoy the exploration of the entertainment world, but it certainly hasn't hooked me in the way the first episode did...but that's ok. I do want to see where it goes, and the team making it seems like they have the resources to take it there

    vinland saga s2 (7/10)

a very, very good season of vinland saga. it doesn't really lean into the sorts of things that I tend to watch anime for (honestly it feels like the sort of prestige TV show amazon or netflix would have produced 3-4 years ago, and I mean that in a good way), but the last 1/3 or so in particular has been very good. it depicts its themes in a powerful way, it's just that ultimately, it's not exploring the sorts of things that I'm more interested in watching shows about. but it is good, and engaging, and Thorfin's character arc is quite something. despite the fact that it's not my favorite show ever, VS does have these moments of just...pure sublime brilliance.

    kimi wa houkago insomnia (6/10)

there is a lot to love about this show. I love the grounded characters, and their organic relationship. that said, it feels like it just...hasn't done much with that. maybe in a s2, if it gets the chance

yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru (6/10)

there is a lot to love about the show. I love how considered it is...the editing, exploring character's thoughts, the relationship building, it's all pretty good. but it feels a bit meandering at times, and the core romance could have been interesting, but in practice thus far has just been...not much. I like this show, but don't love it. but I do really like the style of its editing. and akane is a very fun MC

    edomae elf (6/10)

a nice little show. it looks good! and there are some funny moments and cute interactions. it just never...does much with what it has? it's not very ambitious. which is fine! but it has kept me from like...loooving it

kanojo ga koushaku-tei ni itta riyuu

I wish this show didn't look like it was animated on a paper sack. that said, I am a sucker for this sort of setting, with scheming nobles and all that. still, the story has been pretty by the numbers thus far, though it gets points for having serious chemistry between the ML/FL. I only wish we got to see them together more, and that their interactions could be better animated. but it nails the sort of...charisma and sexiness of a dangerous, mysterious man.

    ancient magus's bride s2 (6/10)

I enjoyed but did not love s1. s2 feels worse. there are aspects I enjoy, and I don't hate it! but it has reallllly taken its time to...go anywhere, or say anything at all.

    demon slayer (6/10)

honestly, very disappointing. some absolutely gorgeous animation, some deeply uninspired storytelling.

    kawaisugi crisis (6/10)

I expected this show to overstay its welcome much earlier. it's been able to stay...fun? as a pet lover it's a cute show that somehow manages not to get too stale. that said, I'm ready for the cour to end--the premise only has so much to it

    world dai star (5-6/10)

this is a show that I want to love, but it feels like revue starlight but without the things that made revue starlight good, and only the ones that made it bad lol (I need to watch kageki shoujo). I probably should have dropped it but I do like shows about The Theatah, so I stuck with it. it's not awful, and I could write a lot about what specifically I don't like, but suffice it to say I've found it a pretty uninspired show. also, theater powers? groan.

kuma kuma kuma bear punch (6/10)

it's fine. not a bad weekly watch. I liked it more than the first season, but I didn't love the first season. there are a lot of reasons why I find the show sort of...merely ok, but I like the second season more because there are more recurring characters (one of my complaints about the first season is how much revolves around like, random side characters that we aren't invested in)

    bakusplosion (5/10)

I didn't love konosuba, and even a lot of fans don't like this spinoff. it's boring and unfunny. megumin was my least favorite konosuba character, and it makes sense that a show focusing on her would kind of suck. yunyun is the only saving grace, but like, a yunyun focused doujin would be much more fun than this show. I should have dropped, but I'm stubborn once I've started a franchise

    In no particular order:

Demon Slayer season 3- is probably my least favorite season of a show I think is more "okay" rather than "good". It's watchable but I don't have a lot positive to say about it.

Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure: Serving Gods Who Go Too Far- some bottom of the barrel isekai. I should have dropped this after the first episode, but I keep clicking on it week after week out of habit.

Galaxy Next Door- dropped. I couldn't get past the initial conceit and that was that.

Hell's Paradise- Enjoyable. It's a little more of a slow burn than people are used to from Mappa so I read a lot of complaints about it online, but to me the world building and characterization for the leads keeps me looking forward to this one every week.

My Love Story With Yamada At lv999- fun, cute josei-type story. After the first couple episodes I went and binged the manga. There's no depth here, it's just a relaxing watch.

ToniKawa season 2- pretty direct continuation from tonikaku kawaii season 1. I've read the manga for this series for years, the anime is a good adaptation.

My One-Hit Kill Sister- dropped. It tells one joke over and over again, if you like that joke this series may be for you. It isn't for me.

Magical Girl Destroyers- this anime is so weird that I don't know what to think. The OP/ED are great. The writing seems to leave a lot to be desired. Trying too hard to be Imaishi-ish? idk. When the dust settles it will either be a masterpiece or a waste of time.

Yuri is my Job!- dropped after 3 episodes. I really like yuri as a genre, but couldn't get attached to the cast of this one at all.

The Legendary Hero is Dead- great OP, hate the MC. Dropped after 2 episodes.

Konosuba- an explosion on this wonderful world!- I like it, but specifically as a megumin fan. I wouldn't recommend it to literally anyone else.

KamiKatsu- I find the MC to be kind of refreshing amongst the various isekai protagonists, but the show itself is a bit of a mess. Definitely not an anime you can share with the uninitiated.

    Skip and Loafer- wholesome, relaxing.

Why Raelina Ended Up At the Duke's Mansion- of all the anime with otome type settings, this one is my favorite. I like the heavy drama tone it has. I do wish it had more animation budget though.

Vinland Saga season 2- I like it a lot more than season 1. The themes and character moments are resonant. Good stuff.

Oshi no Ko- I think it's a little overhyped personally, but still very watchable. It definitely keeps me hooked and waiting for the next episode.

Dangers In My Heart- I was so ready to drop this after the first episode, but manga readers swore up and down that it gets better, and it did. It's a fun low stakes romcom, not a lot to say but I do look forward to it every week.

    Skip and Loafer
    9/10

This one was easily my favourite of the season. The series is written with so much empathy for its characters, something that reminds me strongly of Sangatsu no Lion, one of my all-time favourites. However, unlike Sangatsu, Skip and Loafer has a kind of naturalness and realism to the behaviour of the characters and the way they interact with each other that I’ve rarely seen before in anime. Small conflicts and misunderstandings that in other series would be dragged out for plot reasons are here talked out and resolved soon after they come up. The real plot comes from the deeper characterization of the cast: what drives the story are subtle clashes of personality and background, and insecurities that are made very believable by the backstories of the characters.

The animation in this series is great, with some very nice character acting sakuga. The thing that stands out most visually though is the coloring: the pastel color scheme looks beautiful and is a perfect match for the mood of the series.

For those who have watched it already, some highlights for me were:

    Skip and Loafer spoilers
    • Mitsumi’s home visit in episode 9. I love the slowing down of pace and the detailed natural portrayal of the family dynamics. Makes you feel at home immediately.

    • My favourite episode was e6, the one with the subtle conflict between Mitsumi and Shima. A great example of the nuanced storytelling of the series. Also, I loved the way the episode was framed between the two phone calls with Fumi, ending on the ‘I think you can feel that way about a friend, too’ punchline. So cute.

    • The developing friendship between Yuzuki and Makoto: every time it’s shown on screen it makes me smile! The dynamic between these two is just perfect, and the overall arc (from the misunderstandings early in the series to Makoto ‘explaining’ Yuzuki to her childhood friends) was very satisfying as a side plot of the series.

    Oshi no Ko
    7/10
I expected to like this better, given that Kaguya-sama (from the same author) is one of my all-time favourite anime. But where Kaguya-sama is a clever comedy that slowly tricks you into caring about the lovable idiots of the cast, with Oshi no Ko, I have the feeling I should be caring about the characters to enjoy the story, but the series so far has given me little reason to. Also, while studio Doga Kobo has done a beautifully polished adaptation of the manga, to me it misses the creative inventiveness that made Kaguya’s adaptation so great.

    Birdie Wing
    7.5/10
This one was silly but a really fun watch. Not a lot more I can say about it.

    The Dangers in my Heart
    6/10
I didn’t like the characterization of the main leads in the early episodes at all and was ready to drop this series, but kept going because I was told it would get cute later on, which, to be fair, it did. But it never really managed to stand out in a good way for me.

    A Galaxy Next Door
    5.5/10
I can’t help but feel it would have been much better without the fantasy subplot.

I don't even know. I grew up watching Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, the ones that basically got super popular over time. Also Steins;Gate. The ones I mentioned I basically rewatch every few years, but there's a thing about them being tied to my younger years and I get to experience the shows in different perspectives, and I like to compare differences (I can't be the only weirdo doing this). Aside from that Your Lie in April, that one where the guy and his friends go into a video game, and like 10 more that I can't remember and that's all the anime I've ever watched. If a genre could describe taking the viewer to a world where they could see different perspectives and viewpoints while also following a plot and going really dark with clever usage of comedy, that one. I wish I had more time to go and watch random anime in hopes of finding some gems but I think those days are over hahahah

The most notable show for me by far is Oshi no Ko. The first episode was 11/10. The rest of the episodes have been 8-10s for me so far. The OP is an absolute banger and the general soundtrack is amazing. The season isn't over, but its a contender for my anime of the year.

Oshi no Ko - Really enjoy it, it's one of the few animes my wife will watch with me, we look forward to it week to week. 7.5/10

Hell's Paradise - It's starting off slow, but it's kind of giving me Chainsaw man vibes (which shouldn't be surprising as it's a former assistant to Fujimoto and also Mappa). I am loving the world building and it seems things are likely going to pick up soon. 7.5/10

Tengoku Daimakyou - My favourite this season, love the dynamic of the main characters and the mystery is keeping me guessing (but I think I got the twist figured out). 8/10

I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too - I love to hate this show. It's just trash but I can't look away. 5.5/10

The Legendary Hero Is Dead! - More trash but I'm starting to warm up to it. It's ecchi but I'm finding it kind of in a Kill la Kill fun type way rather than just being perverted for the sake of being perverted. The MC starts off being an unlikeable perverted self serving idiot but turns out to be a clever perverted rascal with a heart of gold. I find myself getting the OP stuck in my head. 6.5/10

I have a bunch I plan to watch (Insomniacs, lv999, skip to loafer, etc) but nice weather means less time for lounging around watching tv.

Heavenly delusion really surprised me in how mature it ended up being - completely recommend.

Hells Paradise is finishing strong, I thought it was abit weak to start with and the character development disjointed, but now that’s out the way it’s got me invested.

Demon Slayer is beautiful as always, too bad the demons were the let down. I think the last season was so great in its build up and reveals, this seasons lack of buildup just left me wanting a second part to the arc.
