Posting this now since we missed this 2 weeks ago.

I was hoping that they would remake the anime from the start for years! I just didn't think it would happen already. Hoping that they nail this adaptation out of the park.

They are starting with the first saga but I expect that it will do well enough that they'll keep going. The pacing should be a lot better with this adaptation being seasonal.

Wit Studio did some big productions already including the first 3 seasons of Attack on Titans, Ranking of Kings, Spy x Family, first season of Vinland Saga, Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song.

The current ongoing anime won't be affected by this. The two projects are separate. Though I wonder if some of the staff will be shared for example voice actors.

A couple other recent notable titles of theirs are Great Pretender and The Ancient Magus’ Bride.

They can do some really nice work, and they really shine when it comes to titles that drip with visual stylization, as seen with AoT, Ranking of Kings, and Great Pretender. They’re a good fit for something like One Piece.

I haven’t watched much of the original but if this remake turns out well I might have to hop aboard.

Neat. Is there any information about what the remake will entail? Any changes a la One Pace?

One Piece's 25th anniversary is in October 2024. I'm guessing they'll want the show out by then. Their adaptations are usually 1:1 with the source so if that's the case, it should replace One Pace.

Which is a good thing. It could use an update mainly to its pacing because honestly without One Pace, it's borderline unwarchable. I find myself skipping so much in normal episodes.

Yes, anyone that watches the One Piece anime will tell you it's padded to hell. There's a massive amount of cruft that can be cut out. One Pace is a fan project which does this and makes some arcs almost 50% shorter to keep them closer to the manga.

It's an adaption that takes what is now just over 1100 chapters of comic of ~15 pages each to almost just as many episodes at 22 minutes of animation each. You might note that 15 pages of comic panels cannot be turned into 22 minutes of animation without extreme padding. What is a tightly-paced and well-composed comic turns into an absolute slog in anime form.

The original anime is considered a huge success, but it's always been pretty close to catching up to the manga so they've had to do a lot of padding over the years to stay behind the manga. Also the animation especially for the earlier episodes is dated from the 90s which was a different era compared to the new stuff that gets released.

I know of at least one animator that's currently working on the Toei version that said publicly that he used to be (and reading between the lines still is) an anime hater (though now he understands why it's produced that way). (Huge spoiler warning for events that happen after chapter 1000: snip)

This version should benefit a lot from the breathing room of never having to worry about running out of material. It should also benefit from hindsight. The current story already does a lot of foreshadowing but with new knowledge there are even more elements that can be set up early. There are also character designs that have changed over the years.

Overall it should make for a much nicer watching experience. I expect One Piece to become a lot more future proof.
