What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
I have been watching Fullmetal alchemist and wow I can understand why people have been loving it so much, I love the characters, action and general world building so much!
Original or Brotherhood?
I'm rewatching Brotherhood right now and I forgot how well it holds up. The dub cast is so good.
Brotherhood! My friend recommend me to just watch that, afterwards I think I will try to read the manga though. I did accidentally watch a bit of the original because Netflix made me confused and I clicked on it thinking it was brotherhood and I thought "Huh this is a very long recap" haha and I agree the dub is great! My favorite is i think King Bradley
It's one of the best of all time, and it really shows. Love King Bradleys VA. It handles a lot of really deep topics under the guise of a YA show too. I need to rewatch.
Shangri-La Frontier - A VR video game anime in a similar vein as SAO without the contrived "if you die in the game or you try to remove your headset you die in real life" shtick. It somehow still manages to make the stakes feel high and captures the experience of playing video games where working hard, grinding, exploiting bugs, etc can make you feel powerful.
Fluffy Paradise - A woman works herself to death and gets isekai'd into a fantasy realm with the power to be friends with all animals. Just some cute and wholesome mind bleach.
Love Flops (7/10) - Starts off as a ecchi harem romcom hitting the major beats you'd expect but then throws you a curve ball. This is an R18 show and there is some nudity depending on the version you find.
Spoilers
It stops being quite as ecchi after the first few episodes and stuff starts to get weird (well weirder since the MC inadvertently SA'd each of his future harem as well as MC and another character getting SA'd by a dog, all along on his way to school). It start to feel like a fever dream as one boy is revealed to be a girl (actually not that big of a surprise), one character is revealed to be an retired assassin but pulled back in to save the MC after being kidnapped and another character is a magical girl defending earth from robots trying to blow up men's dicks. It all culminates to the point where you really wonder where they are going with everything and it turns out that they are all not real, but MC is in a simulation, the AI controlling it is his dead childhood friend and every girl in the harem is an aspect of her personality.Overtake! There are just 12 episodes so far (hopefully it comes back for more seasons, but I'm not finished yet, so idk if they tied it up or not), but it's a light hearted anime about a small formula 4 team. They are surprisingly accurate with some elements, but the anime mostly focuses on the team dynamic rather than the on-track action. There are a couple more serious themes explored and it generally has a good message behind it. I'll probably finish it tonight and then I'll be looking for other sports anime (open to recommendations, I especially love motorsports and basketball).
After that, I'll be hopping back into Vinland Saga. I'm on episode 8 or 9 of season 1 and I'm loving it so far! It will never not be weird watching it in Japanese, though (and I couldn't find a dub on crunchyroll). The voice acting is really good, it's just weird watching vikings speak Japanese.
In general, I'm going to try to watch more anime since I canceled my subscription to basically every other streaming service to save some money.
Oh, I also finished Trigun (original), but I haven't watched the movie yet. It had its moments, but I honestly don't see why seemingly everyone loves it. There were a few episodes (like the last one) that are absolute bangers and I just wanted more of those and less of the filler
Reading a bit of Sakamoto Days and Vagabond while I wait for new Dandadan chapters. Really enjoying Dandadan, haven't been so invested in a manga since I read Berserk. Just waiting for the next Deluxe volume of Berserk as well but uh... it's gonna be a while :')
Solo Leveling's anime just dropped this past week.
Solo Leveling was the series that started my manhwa addiction. It's such a pure power fantasy, and is a fun ride (if you don't think too hard about the plot). Solo Leveling Wednesdays were an event where new chapter releases were so popular they'd take down MangaDex.
My readership bias would still recommend the manhwa so you can appreciate the godly art, but the first episode of the anime was pretty good! And it seems like the popularity is carrying over, since the launch apparently brought down Crunchyroll
Daily Life of the Immortal King season 4
I like to randomly check the series since new seasons tend to drop with little or no news. Surprise, new season! Some people have disliked these later seasons compared to the first one, but I'm still enjoying the ride
Not «new» animes:
Itʼs early to say about a stable watchlist of new animes but for now and what I liked from the first episodes:
The current winter season is notable strong if to compare to previous summer and fall ones.
