What have you been watching/reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
Guess this is the proper way to do the post without getting lost posters then.
Anyway, what have you been watching/reading this week?
Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its Anilist, MAL, or any other anime/manga database you use!
I've been getting back into anime after a bit of a break. I'm usually the kind of person to watch at least a few shows each season so it sort of kept piling up.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho is a pretty wholesome and sweet slice of life anime about 4 girls making their way to Antarctica. Each character sort of gets their own arc so it's not completely in the "cute girls doing cute things" category, it also tries to tell a heart-wrenching story. I'd say if you're a person to enjoy SoL and/or Drama, do definitely give it a shot. If anything it's definitely worth your time.
Devilman Crybaby. Oof this was incredible. I'm a sucker for Masaaki's work (Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong the Animation etc.) and going into the show I didn't even know he had anything to do with it. It looks like Netflix gave him the freedom to make something fantastic, nonsensical, extremely violent and at the same time sort of meaningful? I think the show could have used a couple more episodes (seeing as it only had 10) but if anyone was going to pull off a good 10 episode show it would be Masaaki, so it might just be his fast paced delivery style that had that effect. I would wholeheartedly recommend the anime to anyone.
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. Not much to say tbh, it's an ok show especially if you're a fan of SAO in the first place. Has a few plotpoints that make zero sense but otherwise a pretty dynamic and enjoyable watching experience. Just don't expect too much.
Megalo Box was incredible. A quick disclaimer for people who might be going into it blind like I was. The whole show is downscaled to what seems to be around 480p to give it that "old anime feel". A weird decision on the creators' part to draw high-res and then downscale but I will go ahead and agree with others that you do get used to it pretty quickly and it gives the show that extra bit of "charm". The show is about boxing in a cyberpunk-esque future. It's fast paced, no-filler, straight to the point, violent, has a great cast of MCs and tells some great stories. One of the better endings I've seen in anime as well.
That's all for now but I've kind of been on a binge for the past week so I might come back later to add a thing or two :^)
(Aka "A Place Further Than the Universe") Gotta agree it's consistently good, even getting better having just finished ep6. It gets really enjoyable watching the group once they've solidified the happy group dynamic.
It turns out I'm watching this one really slowly because I'm not wanting to play it in the background, but instead surprisingly wanting to give each episode my full attention.
I also just finished SAO Alternative, and I have the same opinion - it’s enjoyable, but it has some problems.
I think the best thing this show does is not take itself too seriously, and in some places, even feels like it's making fun of the original. I think the show did exactly what I wanted: show us a new story set in the world of SAO. The setting and specifics of how the games/technology work was my favourite part of the original series, I'm glad that was the primary focus of this show.
Still working my way through Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. I have to say, watching the newer Jojo in parallel actually makes some of the older episodes harder to watch, I feel like Vento Aureo manages to get more across in a shorter time-frame in it's first two episodes.
Why are you watching those in parallel?
Why not? Vento Aureo is airing now so might as well.
Because even though the seasons are reasonably independent, there is a sequence of events.
It's not really disruptive to watching it if you haven't followed the exact sequence of events though. All you really need to know going in is the concept of Stands and who Koichi is (and that much I've been able to understand from the wiki and from random clips on Youtube)
I only asked cause you said:
Seems reason enough to watch it linearly, I think :/
I did so, and the only thing I feel about the old episodes now is nostalgia. Which is nice.
Yeah, the cat's already kind of out of the bag now. Like I feel like watching Stardust sort of has me watching a few years of Araraki learning how to be a better writer in real-time. It's not bad by any means but you can't help but compare it to more modern fare which probably took inspiration from Jojo.
I think I'll watch some older episodes to see what I think. Diamond is Unbreakable has some good characters, but I much prefer the epic over the top feel of the earlier seasons. Up until now (episode 26, no spoilers please :P), this season is just a bunch of small stories loosely tied together. It's nice, but that's about it.
Reading akame ga kill zero and watching kakegurui,Hotarubi no Mori e,Rage of bahamut and strike on blood
I started watching Sword Art Online: Alicization when it started airing a couple weeks ago, and then after a conversation with someone on Reddit, I started watching Code Geass. That took about 5 days to finish, and then I watched Konosuba, which I finished in 2 days. Then I watched the second episode of SAO:A, and am considering what other anime I might be interested in watching now.
After reading these weekly threads and feeling sad that I couldn't participate, and another one about the new season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in which I made an embarrassing confession, I resumed my Crunchyroll subscription and realized I wasn't too far behind the current episodes. So I started on the Crazy Diamond season. I was a great fan of Jotaro's serious demeanor, and Yosuke's ridiculous hair was one very silly reason for me not watch this season before. I'm happy I was able to overcome my stupid grudge.
Crazy Diamond is really great, but until now (episode 23) it doesn't have the epic proportions of previous arcs. I honestly think the first arc ever, showing the birth of the rivalry between Dio and Jojo in the Victorian era, was by far the most epic. I'm growing to like Yosuke, but it's hard to love him when Jotaro is right there remembering me that he will always be cooler. Sigh :/
From the episode 18 on, Yosuke became kind of a hustler, which felt very weird and out of character. He is still a good person, of course, but he used to also be honorable, righteous and even a bit proud up until that point. He's like a different character in the Shigechi's arc.
I've been watching That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. It has an interesting premise with likeable characters. Four episodes in and it's super good so far, I would recommend watching it.
