I'm not sure if the creators intent was to walk the viewer through his own path of redemptive understanding, but his smugness is really off-putting. Yes, talk show culture is vapid. Yes, influencer and lifestyle coaching is PT Barnum huckstering. But, Dua Lipa, who is presumable just a stupid aesthetically pleasing performer is actually a curious, intelligent and thoughtful person? How about not making presumptions of people and I'll try not to presume you the creator is not a pretentious prick?

Perhaps I'm being too grumpy. He does make good arguments on intellectual engagement, but the construction of his narrative didn't leave me thinking about his point.

You can only be one thing because it's too hard to sell the breadth of human capability. The law of non-contradiction has been warped into 'no two things can be true.' Which is so fucking boring when applied to people. Stereotypes on stereotypes. Reduction on reduction. People are puddles you see yourself in, rather than a life full of experiences and growth.

The essayist attempts to make the point, but does the same thing to his audience he assumed about the subject. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

i would go further and say i find it entirely expected and obvious that someone whose literal job is to socialise and perform would be good at in-depth interviewing. he talks up oprah's castmate's capability at this, but then for some reason assumes dua lipa would not be equally capable? the interesting thing is obviously not that she is capable of doing this, but that she has chosen to in fact do it—something less glamorous, for a smaller audience. it seems to me to speak not to sophistication on her part, but rather to a degree of earnestness. maybe also comfort with publicly sharing something more intimate. maybe also attempt to spread literacy among those of her fans who might not otherwise have read those books (cf. dolly parton?)

with that said, ignoring the more obnoxious aspects of the frame, i thought the video was a not-that-bad (if somewhat shallow) deconstruction of various interview formats

Eh, everyone makes assumptions and character judgements about people, especially celebrities.

Tell me your opinion on Kim Kardashian. Based on sentiment across the internet , I would guess it's probably pretty low.

Purely made up, but imagine a scenario: you learn that she has published maths papers on topics such as cryptography. Perhaps written some important software libraries. And I mean, actually herself, not co-written honorary crap.
Surely you would question the opinion you previously held about her?

Ps. And of course, it's a YouTube video. There is minimum level of the engagement bait required to get any attention in a sea of shit.

Your thought experiment reminded me of actress Hedy Lamarr, inventor of frequency hopping:

At the beginning of World War II, along with George Antheil, Lamarr co-invented a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of radio jamming by the Axis powers. However, the technology was not used in operational systems until after World War II, and then independently of their patent.

It hits differently because decades have passed. But still… be a Hollywood bombshell, get increasingly bored with all the shallow roles, start some engineering projects on the side? Your thought experiment wasn't too far off.

Yeah, I was surprised to learn that Lipa was into literature to this extent. You wouldn't expect a pop star to have these sort of interests, especially one with Lipa's style and image (as opposed to someone like Lana Del Rey who you would expect to be into literature). I mean how many pop artists use their platforms to promote authors, or even discuss books to any degree.

Bringing it down to an every day level, how many people would expect a young, attractive, and in shape woman to have hobbies that are seen as intellectual? Not to say that it's right for people to make such assumptions based on outward appearances, but it happens. When someone has nerdy interests we expect them to look/dress/act a certain way.

I suppose, for any successful pop artist who has outgrown their initial breakout managed environment (Disney, X-Factor, etc) is likely to have much deeper interests than the vapid make song, get famous of the stereotypical pop diva.

Eh. Some pop artists are clearly not very bright or well read or take interest in much of anything. Even those that write or co-write their music. Harry Styles is one that comes to mind. And Lipa’s lyrics aren’t anything special, she’s no Del Rey or Finneas.

These days I’d even be surprised if some of the current successful authors having the interest Lipa has in this.

I'm not too familiar with him, but a quick search gets me a list of his favorite books. I might have been surprised to learn this if it was during his OneDirection days, but I am not surprised that a rich man in his 30s reads books.

I believe Taylor Swift has promoted quite a few books in the past and makes references to various novels in her songs. I'm sure she's not the only one, either; as @json mentioned, literature tends to go hand-in-hand with songwriting.
