Show Tildes - Gametje

Gametje

Hi all been working on this project for a while in my spare time. I wanted to share it with this community to see what you all thought.

What is it?

It is a set of online games (currently only 2) which can be played in person with a central screen (like a TV) or remotely via video chat with screen sharing. Essentially there is a host screen and then each player has their own player screen (laptop or phone etc). It is playable in 8 languages at the moment (feel free to request any others!) It also has an integrated ChatGPT player which can be turned on/off in game settings if you prefer to play without it. There are some game mechanics to identify a ChatGPT answer which can yield some funny reactions if you choose a human's answer! It has Chromecast support and works well on Amazon Fire sticks. Visually, it is still a little rough around the edges as frontend design isn't my forte but the core concept is there. I have been play testing it with friends but have not shared it publicly yet.

Why is it called Gametje?

I have been living in the Netherlands for some years and my original motivation for starting this project was to create a game that supported languages other than English. I wanted to incorporate something Dutch into the name. tje is one of the diminutive endings in Dutch. It is usually meant to soften a word or make it "smaller". So Gametje -> a little game.

Where can I try it?

https://gametje.com/

You can either create an account (user/pass with email confirm) or try it out as a guest (navigate to either game, then choose continue as guest). Currently it is free to host a game. Happy to hear any feedback (both good and bad). Hopefully the host provider I am using to run the game will hold up.

Thanks!

Looks really fun! One nitpick though: gametje isn't correct dutch: it would be gamepje. Otherwise it sounds like a cool free game to play with friends at home.

Good to know! Didn't know that was an actual word. It was supposed to be half English half Dutch (I'm an American living in NL).

Yeah, it's probably some rule to do with phonetics or loanwords, because it isn't a word perse. All I know is that it doesn't sound exactly right.

"Gametje" made by someone enamored by our use of diminutive language is very cute though.

"Game" ends in an -m sound, in which case the Dutch diminutive adds -pje. This is apparently a regular pattern: Wiktionary has a page about Dutch diminutives.

So why would it be -pje? Based on those rules, gametje is correct and gamepje would be irregular. It references the ending letter not the sound? Didn't expect such a debate over diminutives 😅.

            tje for words ending in -h, -j, -l, -n, -r, -w, or a vowel other than -y:

I honestly never thought about it before. It is a pattern that you eventually just feel. As I understand it, it is the last sound that determines the diminutive, not the writing of the word. The final -e in game is silent, so the word effectively ends with an m. Om the other hand, the -e in "lade" isn't silent, so the diminutive is "ladetje".

I like the clear examples in the game site and I think I understand how they are played. If other Tildes members want to form a group and try please give me a ping

    Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the feedback! Indeed that is similar for Nijntje. My kids love those books (in Dutch and English). I remember a while back there was a Discord server formed for playing some games...

I remember a while back there was a Discord server formed for playing some games together with other Tildes folk. https://tildes.net/~games/18r5/tildes_game_nights_discord_server. I joined back then but it hasn't been too active from what I can tell.
