Blogs: Show your own writing and good posts you have found recently (January)

A thread about Bear Blog a few weeks ago showed an interest in blogging here on Tildes, with a couple of users also sharing links to their own blogs.

I figured we could have a recurring (schedule depending on interest) topic to share both our own recent blog posts and other interesting posts we have found.

This is both to have a space for self-promotion that aren’t their own link posts and a place to highlight creative amateur writing (in the positive definition of the word).

    • Sink zero. I think this is by a Tildes user? Anyways, just an everyday annoying household problem I can relate to and am equally bad at handling
    • “Link in Bio" on the importance of hyperlinks and how the big platforms are trying to kill it
    • You are a blogger, not an essayist which is sort of what made me think of having this topic here on Tildes to promote that more relaxed attitude towards writing stuff on the internet
    • is offline the new luxury? on how being offline is now maybe considered a privileged luxury

As for myself, I saw a weird French movie this weekend, and with the recent passing of David Lynch, I wrote a bit about trusting intuition and intentions when watching movies.

Oh my! I never expected someone to to share a post of mine - yes, that top post is from my blog. I really appreciate you sharing, and I'm glad you could relate. I enjoyed your post about the paradoxes of blogging, and can certainly relate to that as well - I feel like it's a rite of passage to write a post about blogging anymore :)

This thread is a great idea; thanks for putting it together!

From what I published recently, people really enjoyed this post: Selfishness in AI.

I write very very occasionally about things I like on my website. My last post was about the etymology of some universal greetings.

I love the suggested format. I write for myself and if these regular megathreads have a theme, I could link to something that fits if I have it.

And it’s a good way to find interesting blogs. I like the Tildes crowd, so chances are I’ll like the blogs!

...You know what, seeing this thread maybe I should get a blog of my own. I never felt the need to start one until after monolithic social media took over the niche blogs filled, but I clearly do have Thoughts™ (which for the purpose of this thread I guess makes it the blog post I'd share if I already had set up a blog? Now that the idea is in my mind this sort of longer post would definitely be something I'd publish as a blog article then link back here on Tildes.) I'd want to keep a trace of on occasion. Time to put another hat on my self hosted server.

EDIT: While I'm at it, something that might be of interest to someone looking into this thread who also has an interest in self-hosting: there's this piece of software named shaarli which can be used as a personal link aggregator. Perfect if you find something interesting you might want to keep track of for sharing but wouldn't hold up on its own as blog article material, or, going the opposite way, gather sources for an article ahead of time. Whatever you'd have a use for an online lightweight bookmarking service, really. Since it has a tagging system and lets you add text, it could even be used as a blogging platform itself! (albeit a really bare-bones one)

EDIT 2: after looking at some available blogging software, I went with WriteFreely, which seems to do what I want without trying to ram random garbage through the reader's throat or load so many side-services it threatens to melt my poor raspberry pi into slag (Nextcloud, I'm looking at you). I have tentatively put an instance up over at https://blog.oncpoint.ynh.fr/, which for now (...and possibly for the foreseeable future, that depends entirely on when I end up with something else I want to sit down and write about) has a slightly edited version of my post above to test the platform out. So far I like it. Conveniently, its main markup method is Markdown, so I basically just had to copy-paste and reword some bits that wouldn't have made sense outside of its original context as a Tildes text post. It also supports ActivityPub, so if I ever engage in earnest with the Fediverse that will be convenient too.

My most successful post is New Disposable APIs in Javascript — I had an interview and the guy I was talking to mentioned he'd seen the post in the wild, which was a weird experience for me!

But the post that I'm proudest of right now is Why Test?, which is an attempt to describe how I test and why I do it, in a kind of "from first principles" sort of way. I'm trying to write more posts on that topic, but there's so much to talk about in testing that it's difficult keeping my thoughts focused on a single blog post.

Well I suppose I'll share, since some others are too. I run a little personal blog that's really only got a few posts so far. And it's more like a personal diary, meant for me and not really built to draw in outside eyes. It's got a small collection of blog posts and some other miscellany. Very not professional and I'm mildly terrified of having people actually read it! Direct attention is something I am very uncomfortable with!

Anyway, if you do choose to read it, keep in mind that it's basically all personal ramblings and not meant to be anything profound or whatever. With all that said, here's a post I'm relatively proud of: happy new year.

Ah, I guess I should also add that my site is built with Hugo (and thus not with BearBlog), but does use the Bear Cub theme, which is based on the same principles. Oh, and I decided to use @TheMeerkat's JWCL license to cover the works on my page :)

@winther so kindly already shared a post from my blog, but I'll double down as a parent comment for a little more context: what I'm calling The Bygones Collective is my current mental dumping grounds. I chose Bear Blog because I've really been enjoying what Herman has accomplished in that space, and it's clear he cares a lot about the product and the community.

My blog comprises three separate sort of microblogs - a devlog for my WIP "community app" (I'll let you dig into that yourself if you're interested, so I'm not doing too much self-promotion here), a personal blog, and a catch-all catalog of my current (or longstanding) personal interests that I feel like writing about at any given time.

As the post that winther shared mentions, I'm really trying to make regular writing a habit. I first tried to commit myself to an honest-to-goodness journal, but my handwriting is atrocious, and moreover it physically hurts to write anymore because I'm so bad at it, so digital "journaling" it is. None of my work is too meaty yet, but I'm just glad for the space to clear my head every few days and force myself to examine my life from a different perspective.

Most of my posts are music recommendations (weekly). The writing is also very informal and probably not great from a vocabulary or technical perspective, idk. It's fairly off-the-cuff.

I do have a very few other posts outside that norm. I haven't figured out exactly how to expand from there or if I have the desire to do so. I think so, but I'm still thinking that through. Maybe tea/coffee reviews at some point, since those are things I'm really into? Maybe. Maybe link roundups eventually or something.

I've thought about putting my thoughts on tech news and AI and other stuff there, but it really just feels like it doesn't fit the vibe so I keep away from that stuff- I doom about that stuff plenty elsewhere. Trying to keep things weird, creative, and positive for the most part. So if it is tech related, it's a guide or talking about something cool and interesting instead.

Also considering some just random rambling thoughts I have about everyday life types of things.

I'll link the blog again here, but I honestly do not know which post to highlight, so I'll just link the page that lists all posts, so someone can choose: https://inward.garden/weblog/

I've got a little blog on my personal site: https://xavd.id/blog

I post a few times a year, mostly about tech things and/or videogames. I also do a big "favorite media of the year" roundup about games, books, movies, and TV. That'll go up soonish. I also run a small indie review site, https://david.reviews/ I publish micro reviews there, plus some longer game ones if I get review keys.

In both cases, there's RSS feeds for everything and no ads/popups/junk. I feel pretty strongly about making sites that I'd actually want to read. And now, more than ever, it's valuable to own the places where your words live!
