The can opener. Engineering to solve human fallibility. (Spoiler: It didn’t totally work.)

This is about trucks hitting a bridge of known height and not about actual can openers. I was honestly slightly surprised reading the reading the summary but felt stupid once I saw the website....

That said, despite some small amount of disappointment, I'll have to give this a watch later.

I did the exact same double take. It's a fun little documentary though. Worth the 12 mins it is long.

That truck at 9:30 that reads HOPE -- Satisfaction seal meme

I've been there....not physically there. But I was driving a rental one time, at an intersection I've never been to before, and my brain registered three things nearly simultaneously. (1) GPS says turn left. (2) There's a no left turn sign. (3) "Huh, police are doing a traffic stop"

I make that left turn with those three things in mind. The cop already standing there makes eye contact with me, and waves me over. :| I put on my saddest puppy eyes and right away apologized and admitted + accepted wrong doing. He waves me off without ticket. But had I been a big truck, that can opener would have gotten me.

And yeah I don't envy anyone having to "solve" this. The solution they've already done seems about as elegant as you can get without raising the bridge or cutting the road there, and yeah, they've got some wonderful footage of all sorts of vehicles STILL wiping out on that bridge.

This documentary is a little dated; they did end up raising the bridge a few years later. Trucks often just nick the new bar lightly rather than going full can opener.
