I finally made my own donuts for the first time this last week. The glaze I made wasn't perfect, but I was really surprised that the donuts themselves essentially were (as in, if I bought them at a random Donut shop, I'd be happy with them).
Try making donuts! If you have a frying setup to ensure the right oil temperature, it's surprisingly easy.
Yup, the hardest part of donuts for me was definitely getting the glaze decent.
Makes it easy to make beer batter donuts too which are so much better.
I am currently enjoying some Lamb Chopper (aged sheep milk cheese) made by Cypress Grove. It is too hot to cook today. I also have some Hermiston watermelon I cut up yesterday and a hardboiled egg on a plate with some a fresh garden tomato cut up with a pinch of salt. And a mug of water to round it all out.
A few days ago I tried making split pea soup from scratch. I was pleasantly suprised that it was so simple and delicious and not at all like the canned gloop of my childhood.
Edit: Food costs are so high these days I wanted to share that I found the cheese at Grocery Outlet, scored the watermelon at Winco and got the split peas from a local producer Palouse Brand. I think these might be west coast stores and brands, but I love to hear how people are finding flavor at a reasonable price point these days.
Costco croissants, Costco mozzarella, Costco tomatoes, Aldi pesto and Aldi Balsamic glaze make amazing sandwiches.
That was my supper.
We recently picked up a dual section grill (propane and charcoal), which I've been using to learn how to smoke proteins. Tonight is pork tenderloin that's been in the smoke for a couple of hours with Montreal spice. I've been using apple chips soaked in rum, and it's been extraordinary
Latest little bit of deliciousness is bite-sized pieces of pork loin in a marinade of a just a little soy and garlic for about an hour, then grilled on a George Foreman until the nice grill lines show up. Finally, I tossed them in a glaze of honey and malt vinegar and served with steamed garden veggies over a bed of sticky rice.
In terms of drink, I was gifted a can of a pineapple saison; not my favourite.
This weekend I splurged a bit too much. I went to a concert and for dinner we went to an Indian food place and I broke my no animal products rule because I wanted to have a bite of my husband’s lamb. I’ve been off of meat for long enough that it just tasted kind of weird. For my meal I had chana saag with whole wheat roti and lentil soup and an onion pakora. Surprisingly it was too much food for me so I finished the pakora and had the rest of my food with a vegetable samosa the next day.
I asked my husband if he liked the soup and he said yes so I made a big batch of my own version of it. Mine had so much more solid ingredients that I ended up making more of a stew. I was really confused why my pressure cooker was taking so long until I realized it was on slow cook mode the whole time. Even though my spices were a bit off from what I wanted it still tasted pretty good.
Baked potato with leftover brisket.
That sounds interesting. How'd you cook the brisket? Low and slow in a smoker?
It's leftover from a BBQ restaurant.
In an effort to drink more water I've taken to adding a few drops of mint extract to my glass to make it taste more refreshing. I've also been drinking way too much coffee lately and need to cut back.
Try tea, too. Tea from tea leaves is not for everyone, but there are some very good fruit based herbal teas you will probably enjoy.
Simple and cheap burgers with a layer of carmelized onions on the bottom, then the burger, then an egg, and that't it.
Quick, easy, and only about $1.20 per burger
