If you're north north NJ I can't help, but DeLucia's in Raritan blew up from Dave Portnoy (though years of family preference means I haven't actually tried them yet), Chimney Rock Inn in Somerset is good food that happens to have good pizza, Arminios in Chatham is my favorite, and there was a pizza-off at work between Godfather in East Hanover, Vinni's in Wayne, and Boardwalk in Fairfield. (I was out, the winner is a mystery.)
Regardless of preference the fresher bagel is always gonna be better, don't bring bagels from the city to NJ just over the name.

EDIT: Oh, to answer - I'm sure some NY peeps would take offense, but I find a lot of people lump NY/NJ pizza and bagels together. Honestly I've found the NY pizza I've had to be decent but kitsch giant slice stuff. It feels like there's a popularity balance that if they're too crowded and moving too much stuff out the door, or have to because the rent is too damn high, you're not gonna have great food or it's going to take forever or you're paying too much or etc etc. NJ gets more quiet suburbs that aren't fighting for location, so you don't wait or pay out the ass and there's enough traffic for like 2-3 decent spots per town. But that's just my observation...
(FWIW two different coworkers joked this week that they were from the Soviet Union and refuse to wait in line for food in NYC.)
Big fan of Shelsky's on 4th ave in Brooklyn, and Absolute Bagels around 107th and Broadway in Manhattan (don't try to go to this one on weekend mornings, though).

Absolute Bagels is not all it's made out to be. They have tiny bagels and are light on fillings of what fillings they offer. Any of the others mentioned in this discussion are better. I prefer...

butter on a bagel is the way to do it, honestly. if you're looking for the taste of a bagel. but in the dirty jerz you HAVE to do a pork roll egg cheese+spk because that's our state's motto....

I'm in central where all the best indian food is, the only thing we really lack is good tacos.
My office did an informal blind taste test of various NYC bagels and Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe by Prospect Park won out. There’s a new location opening in East Village soon.

Teaneck has a place called Teaneck Road Hot Bagels that I've been meaning to make the trek up for, don't even need to cross into the city for that one! Heard a lot of hype about it

Personally I find, Best Bagels (west 35th between 7th and 8th) is the best bagel in Manhattan. There's always an enormous line, which I do believe is less because of its proximity to Penn Station...

Call ahead to order.

When I was in NY years ago, my buddy recommended Brooklyn Bagel on 8th and 24th. Apparently there’s several locations though.
