In high school, my best friend's dad was an oilfield worker, and a very easy-going guy. But it was tiring for his wife to come up with new variations in the lunches she fixed for him every day. Finally, fed up with his typical answer of "whatever" when she asked what kind of sandwich he wanted, she made him a coffee grounds sandwich.

He never mentioned it to her, but not once did he say "whatever" again when she asked what he wanted to eat.

I know that historical food is super interesting to so many folks (my wife included). Hell, there's entire segments of other shows dedicated to going down those rabbit holes of historical foods! I'm sure there's some omni-nerd of history, sociology and food science somewhere that relish the oppo to look at some of these sarnies.

But how utterly inane, tired and bored must we be to be entertained by a dude making and eating a sandwich? It's so... bizarre in my head to think that this counts as entertainment. Maybe I'm just a boomer in disguise with that, but I cannot fathom how that's interesting to anyone.

It's TikTok, it's not like watching a dude fetching the butter from the fridge and building a sandwich in 15 minutes. It's fast more like browsing a coffee table book about sandwiches, only there's a video element. It also scratches that itch of learning something new and uncommon, with the hilarious possibility of watching a dude eat an awful sandwich from history.

Also, history tells a story, yeah, even the sandwiches. So it's not in my opinion the lowest form of entertainment or does really tell how much we suck as a species. Twitter does that.

Think of it as the diet version of actually going and making the sandwich. You don't get the full experience of it, but you also didn't have to source the ingredients, deal with an almost full jar of some awful fish spread, or anything else. It's an attenuated experience, but also comparatively effortless.

Yeah, I get that, I think? I just don't think it tickles the 'good chemical' release thing like it does for others. Not hating on anyone for it, we're all wired differently I guess.

Eh, sometimes it's about the personality or the format. If you told me the YouTube channel I most religiously watch the second there's an upload was a dude making really bad sausages then I'd... Probably have believed you 15 years ago when everything was novel, but not 5 as video times started ballooning for the sake of ad revenue. He's just entertaining, the format is funny since it feels like he's figuring everything out mid-recording, and they're predictably short and sweet.

It's my trashy reality TV, but in 1-5 minutes instead of half an hour.

TikTok feels like the video equivilant of the Buzzfeed posts to me. "This guy makes historic sarnies! You'll never guess what's on number 5!" - Probably not, because that's inane. Surely the joy comes from making the damn sarnie and eating it (or the lack of enjoyment and sheer masochism of eating an oysters one!?)

Using Ordinary Sausage as an example, sure - if I'm willing to risk breaking a sausage grinder from too much use, destroying my waffle maker with sushi waffles (that turned out pretty good!), turning lobster or caviar into something dreadful, eviscerating my family's olfactory bulbs by opening a can of surströmming in my basement, flying out to try every Chicago dog in the suburban Chicago area, or doing this so many times that I warp my idea of an average 2.5/5 sausage to cat food. Or I watch someone else do it, and - this is where it's no different than TV - I get to watch basically a postmodern comedy-cooking show.

I'm not watching it because I have an intense love of sausages, I'm watching it because the package and host are fun.

I watch a lot of what I call garbage. It’s why I chose the username I chose- because at the most base layer I’ve put probably tens of thousands of hours into essentially one story- variations on the heroes journey.

Looked at that way- watching Adam Savage weather replica stage props on his Tested YouTube channel becomes much more rewarding. Likewise with weird sandwiches- both of which have more real-world possibility of application than all the Marvel movies and series combined (I’m throwing Marvel under the bus here because I’ve watched every single one of them except for the broadcast cartoons- and some of them too.)

What you are calling boring I am guessing I’d find not only interesting, but educational, entertaining, and possibly even useful.

Also- thinly sliced apple on just about any Sammie makes it better.

I enjoy a book / games if I want to be entertained. I go to Youtube and probably follow a few folks on there who talk about Space or other such stuff! But the rapid fire, TikTok, quickcuts just makes me confused more than anything else. Especially because sometimes it's such inane topics as well.

I never really got the Marvel stuff if I'm honest! Deadpool bemused me and the original Ironman was rather good, but the huge universe got really out of hand so quickly! Especially when you look at the movies in a "They're not actually doing very much, the status quo remains the same..." perspective that I did with them.

I think I'm just a massive boomer who doesn't really get the world very well.

That happens every decade though as trends change and people get older. I'm GenX and I definitely pick and choose which upcoming trends I investigate or try out, if any. It's kind of fun being older and out of step with what is popular or current. I like what I like and I approve or disapprove based on my own standards. I do try to pay attention to the youngsters though. They have some good ideas.

Yeah. I'm mid-30's Millenial and I've always felt a little jaded by social media. I had a Facebook account until around 2010/2011 when my career picked up in a big way. I've got LinkedIn and use that do the old "Look how awesome I am professionally" thing, but I don't really grasp the wider understanding of why people use TikTok and the such,

Such is life though, as long as folks aren't hurting others I don't really care.
