From animal protein without animals, dairy without cows, silk without worms, palm oil without deforestation, the options are endless

Edited the title to be the video description, since it's far less clickbaity, and describes the actual contents of the video better.

I'm not particularly interested in the use of fermentation to replace animal products. The reasons why people eat animals are complex, but it all essentially boils down to preference. But using it to develop fibers is extremely interesting. Right now the material of choice of thread if you want the strongest seams is silk, but it's much more expensive than cotton or polyester thread. Fermented silk will make it cheaper, which will mean that fabric made with silk will be cheaper, which means that clothes made with silk will be affordable. And the same thing will happen with spider fibers! This could be revolutionary.

I don't think the world will go vegan until corporations and overpopulation destroy the environment enough that vegan food will be all that is available.

The next most likely scenario is the Alpha Gal virus spread by ticks which gives people an autoimmune disorder that gets triggered every time they eat read meat.

Maybe after that there is a chance for lab meat and fermented dairy ( per the video ) if those products are very close to animal products AND are cheaper than them.

Disclaimer: I've been a vegan for over 30 years.

Since they are producing proteins that are the same as meat and dairy, the al-gal issues might not get solved. I've been vegan for almost 20 years, but I also have a legitimate dairy allergy. So the fact that they can reproduce these proteins molecule for molecule, I would worry that I may not be able to enjoy the alternative dairy.

I still find the fact that this process is finally getting some funding to be a good thing. No way will the world go vegan by 2030, if ever. The political will to keep the status quo is far too strong.

When watching this I was struck by the many ways precision fermentation could be used. Those of us who love sci fi know the trope of synth food on a space ship or space station. This could definitely be pointed in that direction. What a crazy, magnificent world we live in.

Putting this in science because Mic talks about the process pf creating products with precision fermentation. Please feel free to move this if it needs to be in a different group.
