I tried mixing black cherry rum with Seltzer water last night. Figured it would make a nice light crisp drink. It made grog. Sparkly grog.

I’ve been working my way through the Dishoom cookbook. Not only are many of the recipes sublime, it’s been good to learn new spices and new techniques in an unfamiliar cuisine.

Sometimes simple recipes are the best. I made a triple batch of Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce with the last of the season's tomatoes from the garden. Since most of the late tomatoes were yellow or purple, it's orange rather than a classic bright red. The flavor has a good sweet/tart balance, is fresh rather than stewed, and expresses the best of homegrown/heirloom varietal qualities. The tomato acidity perfectly emulsified the half pound of butter into a silky sauce...

I did toss in a cup of chopped fresh herbs and a teaspoon of dried chili flakes during the last 15 minutes of cooking; the last of the garden basil and some hardier oregano and thyme. One pint (enough for 1 lb. of pasta) for this week's dinners, two for the freezer.

I recently made cookies that combined coffee(espresso powder), white chocolate chips and raspberries. I figured that combining those ingredients would work well because two of them work well together, and coffee taste would give the white chocolate taste the 'body' it normally lacks. And man if I wasn't right on that. It was bloody delicious and it's something to repeat.

Trying to eat more fermented foods for good gut health, so I've been incorporating kimchi a lot more into my diet. Wouldn't say I've made any "Korean dishes" per say, so much as I've just been throwing Korean things into stir fries and eating it alongside kimchi. It's pretty good! I make a ton of Japanese food already and there's a huge amount of ingredient overlap between the two cuisines, so it's mostly been a lot of rice and kimchi and veg with gochujang and whatever protein I'm bothered with that day (mostly chicken and tofu). Considering making my own kimchi if I can find a way to do so without distressing the rest of my home's occupants.

Also, trying to cut out processed sugars (again), which means no snacking. My diet has always been one where I eat a really healthy breakfast, a really healthy dinner, but I skip lunch half the time and just eat a ton of garbage that ruins everything. So trying to find healthy lunch and snacking options is my goal at the moment. One of my goto lunches is a really simple combination of fried egg, reheated rice, furikake (a Japanese rice seasoning), and whatever sauces and oils I feel like (kecap manis and sambal is excellent). Put it all in a bowl, mix, that's lunch. Sorta healthy if you use brown rice, can stick an avocado in there too.

If you haven’t tried it, Korean bibimbap is a really healthy and quick meal addition. Pretty much light veggie stir fry, a fried or soft boiled egg, and a heap of kimchi. Rice addition is nice, but the veg really takes up most the room!

I’ve made Thai curry before, but this is a different brand than the stuff I usually get so I’m looking forward to seeing what the taste will be like.

I've been slowly getting back into the groove of real cooking over the past couple months. I'd made a big batch of chana masala and jeera aloo a few days ago and begrudgingly ate it with rice, because I haven't found the heat-and-eat paratha I had in mind at any stores nearby. It took me a whole three days to finally realize I could just make some myself! I had to improvise some baking powder (because I had my bright idea in the middle of the night when shops are closed) and substitute a cast-iron skillet for a griddle/tawa, but the final product was actually very good, regardless of it being my first ever attempt at it. Quite pleased!
