You might not want to eat bugs. But would you eat meat that ate bugs?

I was a livestock producer for many years, and it bothered me to no end that chicken, duck, and pig feed became vegetarian when none of these species are vegetarian. Because at some point we thought it was okay to feed ground up, dehydrated cow back to a cow (which, by the way, is not a meat eater) and ended up with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE - Mad Cow Disease). Cows should eat grass (that's what they are made for), chickens should eat insects (that is what they are made for), and pigs should eat everything but other pigs (that is what they are made for).

Personally, I would eat bugs if the product was palatable, but I don't know a lot of people who would. A less resource intensive feed source for our insectivore and omnivore livestock would be amazing. It almost makes me want to set up an insect farm myself!

I'm glad someone else remembers this. About a year ago Countryfile had an episode about 'refeeding' and they presented it as a both sides "well we stopped this because of health problems but it would actually be more efficient to feed cows dead cow", but they framed the argument as nebulous "health problems" rather than mentioning the horrors of Prions (a protein misfolding that you cannot heat, burn, boil, disinfect or otherwise extinguish from existence) and BSE.

Cows should eat grass. Cows are not meat eaters. Cows are not grain eaters. Cows are grass eaters. Cows are built to eat grass.

Cows fed cows gave us B.S.E.
Cows fed corn (a grain) gave a rise in E. Coli.

There is so much I want to say. I am just bursting! But this doesn't seem like the right place for it!

I would absolutely eat bugs if I didn't have a mild shellfish intolerance that seemed to trigger upon eating fried crickets. They're just another animal, and there's less of a moral issue with eating them than with a more aware creature like a pig or a dog.
