Sobering in some ways, but in others I felt like the analysis was weaker as they got deeper into the military side of things. Which is understandable, as military planning is less in PMG's wheelhouse. They bring up Gaza, and the unfounded assumption that Israeli forces was benefiting from the NATO wargaming. But all the reporting I've seen says the complete opposite; that Israel explicitly rejected US strategic proposals and refused to learn from the US boondoggle in Fallujah which bore such large parallels to the expected fighting in Gaza.

I appreciate the insight into a realm that most people will never see, and recognize that the access PMG was given is explicitly to attract a new generation of planner/gamers. But I felt like their moral arguments were very muddled. That's fine! There doesn't have to be a singular united theory of war as defined by PMG. I did appreciate seeing his conflicted feelings regarding the industry, but his call to action to denounce wargaming as a whole fell very flat for me. It's a tool for planning and training in times of peace, and isn't in itself evil.

I do agree that the military analysis side was weaker. My first impression of his call to action was similar to your take, but after some reflection I feel like he was, with his call to action, going for more of a 'we shouldn't let the military be the sole force dictating the development of wargaming as an academic field,' though perhaps it didn't come out quite that way.

I didn't get that from the video, but I can very much agree with your take on his take.

I understood the israel/gaza benefit less as them directly benefiting from strategies and moreso just having previous access to the community and tools and learning how to utilize them better internally rather than relying on foreign strategies. Which implicates said community of indirectly, potentially, aiding israel.

People Make Games seriously produces some of the best journalism out there. Discovered them after someone mentioned it here on Tildes a few months back and damn every new video they've come out with has been about some weird, interesting, and/or important topic that I previously knew almost nothing about. Their videos on Valve, Roblox, and Disco Elysium were all top tier journalism and then the stuff about LARPing or Excel games or competitive Farming Simulator is just a joy to watch. I haven't started this video yet but I'm sure it'll be more of the same from them.
