But of course this says nothing about the quality of the new game. Despite the Stellaris name on it, this isn't developed by Paradox. They're only publishing something developed by Whatboy Games, which has a single (if Very Positively) reviewed game in its history. This should be thought of more like a Warhammer game, where Games Workshop was letting their IP be used all over the place. It could be great, it could be terrible. The IP itself is no guarantee of quality.

Next they'll be doing league play. I'm kinda interested to check this out now. The graphics are almost as pretty as modded Stellaris itself.

    From the Steam page:

Time is a valuable currency in our everyday lives and we all know how much time a really good 4X game can take to complete. What if you could have a 4X game that can be played in the time that it takes you to do the laundry?

Stellaris Nexus is a multiplayer turn-based 4X clash for galactic dominance, played from start to finish in about an hour!

The main selling point of this appears to be that the games are short (as in an hour or two) -- specifically to deal with the issues that 4X games have with game length. I'm not sure how it'll deal with other multiplayer issues (like asymmetric turn lengths), but it seems like the goal is to be similar to Stellaris, but to make multiplayer feasible by reducing the time commitment.

If turns can somehow be taken at the same time, gameplay could probably be sped up a lot. There's a lot they could do with game design to make a 4X play like an RTS. Something between StarCraft...

It's honestly not a bad idea. Most 4X multiplayer collapses due to synchronization problems (hi Endless Space) or the games just take longer to finish than any five humans can find the time to play for. Perhaps making the multiplayer the priority and focusing on that over a shorter time span is the way forward.
