The writer discovered that even though he was working and being productive and good at it etc, that the thing he was working super hard on wasn't what he needed. It's really fortunate that he was able to diagnose the actual problem:

Maybe I have everything I need now, but it’s still nice to be known by people too. We’re designed to live that way. That’s why I wrote this blog post. Now you know me a little bit, both the good and the bad.

We are designed to be intimately known by another person: to not only have their passing interest or momentary empathy, but to be truly seen, down to our cores. It partially explains why some would rather be deeply hated than forgotten, why tyrants build insane monuments, why we medicate ourselves with addicting ourselves to work and play and sex and fame and hobbies and hustle.... Because the alternative is to cease to exist, and that's deeply horrifying to us.

I wish he'd gone a bit more about his recovery though. It can't be a short and straight path.

I identify with a lot of this blog post. I was never as driven as the author, and probably not as talented, but I remember being very passionate about specific "rules" about how to develop software or do other things in life in a very particular way. I didn't have an overnight epiphany, but as I got older I started losing interest in such things. For me, I think there has been a reduction in ego for whatever reason. I'm not as interested in recognition or being the best at something. It may be some minor enlightenment, or it may just be something as simple as different body chemistry as we age. Of course, some people continue to be driven to some "greatness", and they ruin their health or just make themselves miserable for years.
