Ace Combat is a simulator, but not of reality - a retrospective

Like the series it describes, it's a retrospective that's a little bit over-produced for what it is. However it absolutely nails the reason why the series is so beloved. Like top commenter...

Not to capture the reality of aerial combat, but to understand the fantasy of it.

I love the Ace Combat games. Grew up with combat flight sims (first one was Chuck Yeager's Air Combat) and still play every game with an inverted Y-axis because of it. Too realistic isn't fun: I don't want 30 minutes of pre-flight system checks...I want a billion missiles and to shoot them at a giant flying wing the size of Manhattan.

Actually just ordered a Steam Deck and am looking forward to playing through AC7 again on it.

Aside from Ace Combat, it's damn near impossible to find a proper flight game these days. In particular, I've been looking for a WW2 themed one and the best thing that seems to exist is IL-2 Sturmovik, which, even with all the Arcade settings cranked up, just didn't work for me. Way too much sim and not enough game.

No one believes me these days but it used to be default, as a result it annoys me when people call it "inverted" because its not. I don't know when it changed exactly but is was early 90's-ish, I have no idea what dingaling thought it was a good idea let alone why others went along with it. But here we are with every game having the controls all jacked up because some idiot in the 90s didn't understand something as simple as the Y-axis.

That being said as long as they enjoy the game I guess it doesn't really matter except for the fact that there are some games with no option whatsoever to change it making the game completely unplayable for the majority of old farts like me.

I should go back to Ace Combat 7 though, My experience with the series was only with 2(Finished), 3(I remember playing it but not sure up to what point).
Then the first game playing after these two being Assault Horizon definitely wasn’t a good “welcome back”, if I didn’t read more about it when I started playing it, I would’ve assumed most games after 3 were like it and would’ve been put off playing any other newer Ace Combat game.

Anyway after I finish AC7 I’d need to go back to 3, then play the numbered games in between. How is 360 emulation nowadays? Is AC6 playable on an emulator?

These three are all on the PS2 and all play well emulated. They are also the best games in the series. While order doesn't matter, I would play 4 first, as it is their "rebound" game after 3 under performed in sales. 5 and Zero can be played in either order and both are incredibly great experiences.

360 emulation is pretty good these days, if your computer is beefy enough. I haven't emulated any Ace Combat games, but RDR1 is playable from start to finish in the Xenia emulator, with extra bells and whistles like upscaling and unlocked framerates. It takes a bit of screwing around to set it up, and you'll need a working 360 around to rip discs with if you haven't got the files through other means.
