My initial reaction to this was going to be a sarcastic “color me surprised”. It was clear that Konami was only interested in using the Silent Hill IP as a money making machine since their big announcement about a year ago about the projects they will be producing that included basically no information about anything they were doing. They had the one remake game from Bloober team whom it seems obvious that they’ve been wanting to do this project since their inception, a movie that didn’t appear to even be anywhere near actual production, and another game that had zero real details except for one or two famous people attached to it.

But then when I actually read the article I was flabbergasted that they could possibly shatter well past the sub-basement of my expectations and make something worse. I can’t believe that they made a version of “twitch plays Pokémon” combined with an FMV choose your own adventure format. And then you literally pay for influence and it somehow has a season pass as if it were Fortnite.

I wasn't sure about using a GamesRadar article, but that headline does a good job of articulating how many fans like myself reacted. I was originally cautiously semi-optimistic that they might do something interesting, but this...really looks awful. As one of those "long-suffering" Silent Hill fans who have been craving an experience akin to what Team Silent did with 1-4, I'm fairly disappointed and unsure what the other SH games coming out of the pipe will be like. Any other fans of SH on Tildes? What was your reaction?

I think I've given up a fair amount on the Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid Saga's. They all seemed to have had a great first load of games, then the rest are just kind of 'meh' from a storyline and investment perspective. They're often great tech demos, but nothing more.

But this just looking abhorrant. Maybe this is our own personal Silent Hill? One without fog...

I'm a big fan of Metal Gear and have completed every game in the franchise including the MSX titles and both Acid games. I agree that the series has lost its way, and the rot arguably started to set in with MGSIV. I loved Guns of The Patriots, but it was honestly more of a movie than a game and it felt like Kojima was actively trying to end things for the fans. Tying up all the loose ends, bringing all of the characters storylines to a close. Rising and Peace Walker were excellent additions to the franchise, but felt a bit vestigial.

Finally, we ended up with Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Bleh.

I was never an avid fan of Silent Hill, though SH2 is an obvious classic of the medium and I have fond memories of playing it on the Xbox. I can't speak to the direction the series has taken because I haven't followed it.

As for Resident Evil, I think the franchise is undergoing something of a renaissance. The remakes of 2 and 3 were sensitively done - especially 2 - and utilize the modern engine to breathtaking effect. The integration of 4-style controls with 2-style atmosphere was seamless. RE2 remake feels like the definitive version of the experience, which is saying a lot.

As for 7 and Village, it's worth remembering that first person titles have always had a place in the RE canon (the Gun Survivor spinoff games). I haven't had a chance to play them yet, but I'm optimistic.

Not to mention that 1.5 hour cutscene!

Finally, we ended up with Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Bleh.

Don't forget the remaster that has just biblically shit the bed as well!

After 4, the games basically went to American developers who fundamentally mismanaged what made the series unique and terrifying. There's a good video on YouTube (Max Derrant I think) who talks about the difference in horror types between the West & the East and it really made sense why 1-4 are great/good and the rest are 'meh'.

I've heard big raves. But I'm a little hesitent with remasters, simply because... well, I've done this already. GIVE ME SOMETHING NEW. I don't care if it's new IP with zombies and evil corporations and a bit deriviative! But please, anything new.

The Gun Survivor games were hilariously weird. Felt like House of The Dead... but in your lounge, on the Wii (of all things).

I am optimistic for RE. But I guess I'm just a bit jaded as I want to see new IPs and devs/publishers are terrified of the investment now.

MGS5 came around and I didn't bother to buy it for quite a while. When I did I was surprised at how good the gameplay was, but most of the time I just kind of found myself asking "why am I playing this?" It just didn't feel like a MGS game because even though it had all the mechanics done sublimely well, it just missed the melodramatic and jargony flare that the series was known for. In a way it kind of felt more like an early Assassin's Creed game.

I'm also just the kind of person who would prefer the occasional long but gripping cutscene to the long stretches of unfocused and meandering gameplay. I'm not a "make your own fun" type.

Walking through the first few structures, abandoned, cold, dead... that brought back a lot of feelings for me. But then they added the insane B&B unit that just bored me to tears.

Not even mentioning Prague being BEYOND tedious.

It just felt like a game that the Director wasn't all that focused on. It meandered all over the place in feel and with Snake suddenly being 905 years old? I dunno, it lost something. It really pushed the "WAR IS BAD" in your face stuff as well. At least in MGS1-3 it's done in a nice, intellectual, melodramatic feel.

I haven't even looked at the rest. Apparently Volgin from MGS3 survived somehow!?

I’ve got to say that the insanity behind the B&B unit is one of the appeals to me. I’m also one of those freaks who enjoy those kusoge “what were they thinking?!” vibes.

I appreciate they went through the "These gals have seen something", but then the break to their 'beauty' stage feels very offputting to me.

We had fantastic feminine villians (Boss, Sniper Wolf) who were both beautiful and monsters due to war. The B&B's just felt "HEY BOYS, LOOK AT THEM TIDDIES!" rather than anything grownup. Sniper Wolf's dying conversation (despite being lungshot...) is fantastic. She's a Kurd, she's been fucked on a daily basis and only became the weapon she is because of Big Boss. The B&Bs have little connection to Big Boss, it's always just bothered me!

                  old PS3.

I borrowed a friends when MGS4 came out and accidently absorbed a weekend into the game.

I've been probing eBay for PSX & PS2's lately... Don't do it.

It’s kind of like hearing about Bayonetta for the first time and seeing that her fighting animations look like pole dancing. It sounded ridiculous and maybe a bit embarrassing. But where Bayonetta works and the B&B unit fails is that pole dancing is empowering and the gameplay does a good job of making you understand it. MGS4 does not. So it turns into a little puzzle to put together to understand why it was done that way. Its even better if there is no way to prove a definitive answer.

Some games can be run at 4K and look beautiful, and some games take so much resources to run you'll have a hard time making it run well at the original resolution. Steambot Chronicles, for instance, requires slow software rendering and it runs unacceptably slow on my Steam Deck, which means painfully choppy audio at the same time.

It expands on the original story a good bit, so it still has a fresh feeling in the cinematics etc.

I can't say I ever want a game to fail, but it seems likely with this one in terms of making something that feels complimentary to the SH universe. I don't think they could have missed the mark more if they tried. It almost feels like they went the "Cloverfield" route where the devs took a random, half-finished game or idea and then received money to slap a brand name on it. It doesn't feel like Silent Hill at all, but maybe could have been an interesting thing on its own similar to Until Dawn.

I feel you in regards to RE (I never played MGS all that much so I can't speak to that). I thought 7 was okay and Village was a decent game but didn't really feel all that much like an RE game. I've played RE and SH since the first PSX incarnations (I have a soft spot for old tank-control RE games), so it's just depressing sometimes to see the directions your beloved franchises can take.

Pretty much. The reality is, they're not really our franchises so we have little say in what and where they should go. I remember getting traumatised by the Silent Hill demo for PSX (The guy wrapped in barbed wire on the fence scared the hell out me) and then promptly deciding to get my dad to buy the game when I had enough pocket money. Same with Resident Evil really. I loved 1, 2 and 3. But I lost a lot my own personal enjoyment from that point onwards, though I am acutely aware that 4 really revolutionised the "over the shoulder shooter" genre again.

PT had my shitting myself and wanting more (just like everyone else) and we never got that.

MGS 1, 2 and 3 are honestly some of the best games I ever played. 2 is probably the reason I work in the field I do (Data Technology) and probably directly led to my cynical nature of authority. Everything after those felt like a repeat, an iteration based on what the industry wanted... rather than what I personally did, so I didn't really get into them.

At least we got a nice new meme out of it with the "It's trauma!" emote. Already downloaded it to use as an emoji on Discord, it's nice and pretty and rainbow-y, and completely and hilariously tone deaf to Silent Hill.

I saw a video about this, and seeing clips of the actual live chat emotes you can buy was just mind-boggling. There's the rainbow "It's trauma!" one, and a face-palm one that just does NOT feel like it fits for Silent Hill. I'm not even a fan of the games, just appreciate them and mourn the loss of Silent Hills (Junji Ito on monster design would be amazing!!), but anyone with any knowledge of the franchise could tell how ridiculously out of place these emotes are with the overall tone of Silent Hill.

Does not make me optimistic about everything else they're doing.

Agreed, I've already seen a meme with a clip of Joe Pesci staring at a screenshot of the game and saying "what the f*ck is this shit?". I'm a fan of the first four games only to be honest,...

Agreed, I've already seen a meme with a clip of Joe Pesci staring at a screenshot of the game and saying "what the f*ck is this shit?". I'm a fan of the first four games only to be honest, everything that came after them always seemed to fail to grasp the magic of what made those games unique and interesting (especially 2 and 3 for me). To see what's basically a streamer Twitch battle with some vaguely SH-themed trappings and emotes couldn't be further from what made those games a big deal to a lot of people.
