Still kind of expensive, but I put it on my list of "things I'd enjoy but would never buy for myself" so that my family doesn't have to guess at what I'd like for birthday/holiday presents.
That's not a bad idea as far as guys ideas go. I just have difficulty coughing up that money, as I generally don't have a whole lot to begin with. But, if I get a big enough bug up my butt, I may...

Right, it's not an insurmountable amount of money but... I think the biggest question when buying something like this "will I get $250 value out of this purchase?". The answer is not immediately clear, even with the free 24 games, as not all of those are going to be for everybody. So I would say that if you're intrigued about new ways to play (as we were with DS or Wii) or if you want to play exclusive indie games (already some have won awards) or even just interested the mix of retro vs modern (it's a sort of 1-bit classic Macintosh but with the power of something inbetween SNES and PS1) then you'll get the value. And if not you can sell it on and not lose much.

I’ve had mine for about 6 months, and I definitely feel like I’ve gotten tons of value out of the system. I take it with me everywhere. Break at work? Check. Passenger on a boring car ride? Check. Waiting in line at the bank? Check. It’s hard to really grasp how tiny the machine is until you are holding it, but for me that’s the best part and what allows me take it everywhere. I never got nearly as much use out of my DS back in the day, and these days my Switch only leaves the house if I’m flying or taking a train. The last time I carried a handheld with me this much was my Zelda Game & Watch, until I beat Link’s Awakening again. The difference is that had 3 games and the Playdate has infinite games. And even after you get your 24 free games, other games out there are dirt cheap compared to any other platform. The most expensive game on the market that I am aware of is $15. Most games are between $2 and $10, but some are even just $1 or free. Heck, Mars after Midnight is only 6 bucks!! That’s insane!
So yeah it’s a big initial cost, but after that I’m just coasting. My broke ass can buy a new game every week and it’s no big deal.
Edit: if we assume that all 24 season one games could have been sold for $5 that’s already $120, so it’s almost like the system only costs 80 bucks.

It's tempting for sure, my issue is that it overlaps with stuff in already own in regards to a portable handheld to slip in my pocket. I already own a PSP Go and a Miyoo Mini, both of which cover that very quick game when you have a moment and cost me far less. Of course, the Playdate has it's own unique games, so that's a selling point.
How do you find the screen? I've seen a few complaints about it not being backlit, but I don't really think that would be a huge problem for me, as the only time I'm playing in a dimly lit room is when I'm lying in bed.

Edit: the screen is so highly reflective, so even in dim light situations I can still see clearly at the right angle.

For me the screen looks amazing, but will require some slight angle adjustments from time to time to optimise the amount of light it's reflecting. It's a world away from GB, GBA, Palm, Psion, etc. The screen technology is decades newer.

Yeah, I've seen some complaints about the screen, but was wondering if they were fairly overblown based on the Youtubers reviews I'd watched. I have read it was better than the "classic" unlit screens and I assume it would be playable in most situations, but was just something I'd been thinking about.
I'm still very tempted by a Playdate, but really wish I could pick one up for $150 rather than $250.
Used is my go-to for everything, pretty much. Not only for cheapness sake, but also because I feels less "consumery" if you get what I'm saying. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any Playdates for...

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any Playdates for under retail price so far, but that will hopefully change soon, as I do know they've finally got production under control and have a steady supply now.
Absolutely I buy used when I can for the same reason, to help reduce waste in some way. Here in the UK eBay sold items show Playdate selling for around £200, so at least you'd be saving on...

You can buy games in the sale (last day is tomorrow) no need to wait for your device. When you eventually log in on your device all the games will download. Save yourself a few dollars.

The latest game from Lucas Pope (Return of the Obra Dinn; Papers, Please; etc)
Absolutely inclines me to get a Playdate, but $250 after shipping is definitely a sticking point for me.

You can maybe pick a used one up for that price? You'd register it and get the 24 games, too!

I bought another seasons worth of games... Stupid sale efforts.
