Props to NCSoft for having an informed and intelligent leadership team. This is the sort of thing that makes me like a gaming company more, and want to support them.

I never played it, but I have heard a number of people go on and o about how special this game was in terms of both mmos and super hero games. If I recall correctly each player character had a pretty well defined and personally made origin story that established a background for more involved role playing.

To memory it’s also got a pretty wide selection of powers which made people happy. It’s not just math with a skin on it. Or maybe it is but it’s a really nice and well thought out skin

I've played a ton of CoH, more than any other game (probably more than most other games I've played combined).

As far as backstory goes, each character selects one of 5 origins for where their powers come from (Magic, Mutant, Natural, Science, or Technology) which doesn't have much of an effect on gameplay, but gives you a starting point for theming your character. Then you select your Archetype (character class, more or less) and then a primary and secondary power set. Afterwards, you design your costume, choose colors and maybe an alternate animation or two for your powers (this was added later in the game's life, but was a welcome addition), and finally you pick your name and can write out your bio if you're so inclined (as long as it's 1000 characters long or less).

The real magic of the game was always the costume creator, though. That, combined with the special effects from the powers you select, really help pull together a theme for a character. Honestly, the hardest part of the game has always been finding a clever superhero (or villain) name that hasn't already been thought of. I keep a running list of names I'm considering using on new characters some time. Sadly, most of the character names I have on my list currently are better for villains, and I prefer to make heroes. Highlights of my list include: Ughtrocity, Amphetameanie, and Indefensibull.

Same here. It was a real contender to WoW for people's attention back in the day.

There's enough that the group running it offers it for free. Last I checked, they only open donations up to pay for the server costs once a month, and it is usually met within 24hrs. Then anyone who wants can play for free. Which I have immense respect for, especially in the modern economic landscape of Season Passes and micro-transaction cosmetics.

I played it when it originally came out, and it was a cultural milestone in the evolution of MMOs. Once WoW came along it declined in population but as with all games, there will always be a hardcore fan base.

That's awesome. I was on the Dreamcast and Phantasy Star Online wagon but I was always envious of what PC gamers had available to them. Sounds like I missed something super cool!

For anyone who'd like to play, I recommend checking out the New Dawn servers. It's City of Heroes + a ton of QoL improvements. You can grind as much or as little as you'd like. It's something my gaming group does a couple of times a month, and it's just plain cozy fun. The graphics are good enough, you can play on what would pass for a potato at an acceptable framerate, and there's a surprising amount of depth in the power set + enhancement combos. I never even played it back when it was new, and am still having a blast, even without the benefit of nostalgia. We run radio missions, play themed toons, hang out as friends. Good times.
