That’s insane. That’s over 1300 hours of attempts at this single 2:00ish segment, or about 170 8 hour days.

    That’s insane.

Also, in case you want some more data... since taking the record under 2:01 in July 2020, I estimate I've done more than 40,000 Tyson attempts. Only 9 of those attempts ended at 2:00, and this was the fastest one by far.

Tangentially related: another opponent in MTPO is called King Hippo. He used to be the biggest source of RNG in the game. Because of this people in SummoningSalt’s Twitch chat used to guess on the time to complete the Hippo segment given its variability (other opponents are easily beaten in the fastest time in most runs). I made Salt a bespoke web app/Twitch bot to record guessing rounds and maintain a leaderboard. Some were much better than others!

But then a new strat to defeat Hippo consistently called Hippo Manipo was found.

Also worth considering that the vast majority of attempts probably end before he beats Tyson, since getting hit immediately dooms the run, like in the beginning of the original clip

This comment is not about the world record pursuit in this old game, but every time I see anything about Mike Tyson's Punch Out I'm reminded what a brilliant achievement it was. I remember being so impressed by it when it came out in 1987 because the presentation, graphic design, sound design, controls, and gameplay are all so perfect, especially given the hardware limitations of the NES. I don't think it seems any less impressive today and it still is very fun to play.

Just an example of the clever design: This was originally an arcade game where your character was a see-through wireframe so you could get a POV at the same hight as the character. The NES couldn't easily do that, so they just made the character very short so he wouldn't block the view of the opponent. This decision makes your character a literal underdog and contributes to the setting.
