News post on Steam, for those not Xitter inclined.
Thanks, this also announced that the game hit 2M sales across all platforms. That info was missing from the xeet - maybe it was in a reply, but those are no longer shown to logged out users.
This is great news! More content for great roguelikes is always welcome, and I'm excited to see what the developer comes up with. "New ideas and strategies" is intriguing language - sounds like it's going to be more content such as Jokers and the like, expanding the core gameplay, which I'm totally up for!
Very interested in what the other two reveals could be!
I saw some people theorizing Steam Workshop support as one of the reveals, which would also be very welcome. Workshop support has given a lot of life to some of my other favorite roguelikes, such as Slay the Spire, Monster Train, and most relevantly, Luck be a Landlord. The community for Balatro seems to be very passionate and creative, so it'd be wonderful to see what they could do with Workshop support, especially with the precedent of mindblowing mods like Downfall for Slay the Spire.
Perhaps another reveal could be something a bit smaller in scope, such as a collaboration of some kind, merch, etc... That would be my likely bet.
I'm guessing one of the reveals is going to be an official mobile version, since they've been talking about it for a while! Steam Workshop would be a great add too for sure.
Oh, of course! That's almost certainly one, can't believe that slipped my mind!
Early previews of Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers have a Jimbo card you can add to your deck, so that’s something available. Wouldn’t be that big of a shock if that was one of the reveals.
Hey, another Luck be a Landlord fan! It definitely hit the sweet spot of planning and randomness where it really felt good to play and impactful to plan. Are there any mods for it that you'd recommend? I mostly played it prior to full release and haven't tried it again recently.
I hadn't sank my teeth too deep into the mods myself. I found that the modder TwoLesbiansInATrenchcoat had a lot of great mods that seemed to be designed well, focusing on providing more depth and options for a wide variety of builds in the game. They also had a list of favorites that I found lots of good stuff from. But honestly, I'd just sorted by 'Most Popular' and tried adding all the mods that didn't seem too meme-y, lol.
Great game, though! My friend got me into it a while ago, and I greatly enjoyed my time with it. : )
Awesome, thanks!
I'm glad this will keep getting content. I love the core gameplay, but I feel like it kind of gets to min-maxing and having mathematical solutions rather than some x-factor craziness and combos that other roguelikes have and keeps things feeling fresh. I was satiated with Balatro a lot earlier than BoI, StS, etc...
That matched my experience, especially with the challenge modes. There were a lot of seeds where the early cards were worthless, and the process of resetting and trying again was agonizing. You had to end run, go back to the main menu, select Challenges, select the challenge, start run... For a situation where you really did need to get a good seed to beat the challenge, it was unfun UI.
Totally agree that UI was painful.
If you know you're about to die and you have a keyboard you can hold R to start a new run. I think that worked with the challenges too? But sometimes you gotta shoot your shot and see if you make it.
