All I wanted was a successor to Wing Commander, and so when CIG launched their kickstarter I gave them 30-something dollars with the hope that Squadron 42 would be completed somewhere around 2018. I loosely followed the development, checking on it every few months and trying out the builds once or twice a year. I think it was around 2017 when I stopped looking into it at all, fully accepting that Squadron 42 had no priority over The Verse and selling more ships.

Another release window for Sq.42 has now been set for approximately 2026 but I have no confidence that they will hit that mark. Judging by my play-time in the betas you could say I've gotten my $30 worth of entertainment, but that doesn't stop my disappointment in the whole saga that Star Citizen has become over the dozen years since that kickstarter.

So they're making a standalone medieval fantasy game in order to make a science fiction game.

Other ideas to fund Star Citizen, including more ships at higher prices, will not surprise those familiar with the game’s development. However, one potential oddball is a third game in development themed around a medieval fantasy. Sources said that the details of the project are slim, but it is a means for CIG to release more than just one style of game, they said. Nevertheless, whether or not the backers of Star Citizen want their money to fund a fantasy game is a question for another time, as is how long the game will take to develop.

I'm not sure why they think anyone should trust them to make another game, when they can't even finish the two they're currently "working on."

Nothing was announced at citizencon this weekend about this "potential third game." If this is happening, it's under wraps, but I'm skeptical if that is the case.

In 2012 I was initially interested in the project (a space sim by Chris Roberts, to be released in 2014, hell yeah!), but I quickly lost all hope for it when they made "First Person Combat" a stretchgoal, IIRC at 20 million dollars.

Because that's just not how games are designed. Developers don't have a concept for a space sim and then just add a major completely unrelated genre to it. That's just not how game development - or any large project - works, and it made clear to me that they had no serious concept or plan for Star Citizen at all. 12 years later I'd say that proved to be true.

Do you remember when Chris Roberts gathered all these actors in a studio to feel like a real hollywood director for a day? That was nine years ago, in 2015. I think Witcher 3 was released that year.

And that's my biggest problem with Star Citizen: I don't think it's a scam per se, but it is a project full of mismanagement and incompetence. They burned through hundreds of millions of dollars, promising the moon, selling jpegs of ships for thousands of dollars, changing course all the time, while having basically no plan how to build what they promised. That's just fundamentally not ok to me.

For the sake of their community I hope they release something somewhat finished someday, but I expect it to be a billion dollar game with fundamental design flaws and a horrible story, 6/10.

    Cult-Like Culture

[The culture] is the result of CIG’s own doing, which will see experienced staff replaced by younger and cheaper developers, who’ll find it difficult to learn from more experienced staff because there aren’t any. One source went on to say that they are aware of some people who were hired simply because they were fans of the game.

so sad to see Freelancer still being Chris Robert's best game to date :) Hope that drives the point home. And that game wasn't even finished lol.
