Feels like a waste of talent. There's clearly a vision here, but I fear it's going to be contained and limited by the demands of Cash Influx #21.

There are very few people left at Bungie who got to work on Halo. And how they've handled the destiny franchise over the last few years has given me almost no hope for the future of the studio.

That said, I do think the plot of the original Marathon is some of the best sci fi writing, full stop. The video at least has a shitton of character and the world looks interesting. Here's hoping "extraction shooter" is for the marketing team and there's more ambition than that.

It's kind of an insult to the original Marathon series. #Rampancy4AI

Damn. I normally really dislike cinematic trailers because they tend to not say anything about the game and just serve to build up empty hype. But this was great, I am mildly impressed.

"Extraction shooter" does not fill me with hope either, but let's hope they get some of that style into the actual game, and it's not just "well they're all reconstructed beyond recognition, which is why everyone has 15 different neon cosmetics on".

Remembering Marathon, I think it always looked kind of bad and the graphics aged much worse than something like Doom or Quake, but some of the scifi alien style had good ideas, which seem to be reflected here in a novel way.

Watched a little of the gameplay. It's pretty! Otherwise, it looks uninspired.

Could have been an awesome game if it was single-player with a storyline, but nope. Going to be a forgotten multiplayer cashgrab shooter instead.

This trailer is absurdly cool, I’m a huge fan of the visual style they’re going for! We’ll see how the game is when it comes out, but knowing Bungie, at the very least the visuals and gunplay are going to be top notch. I’ve never really gotten into an extraction shooters before (I did play a lot of battle royale’s though) so I’m cautiously optimistic.

As someone with over 2000 hours in Destiny 2 and only about 100ish in extraction shooters, Hunt Showdown specifically, I'm cautiously optimistic. The gunplay and combat appears to be strikingly similar in feeling and design as Destiny 2's, which is a compliment because Destiny 2's combat is excellent. The real question is what kind of players Bungie wants to play this game. If it's former and current Destiny players, they'll have to make the PvE side of the game very engaging and the PvP side at least tolerable, since the vast majority of Destiny players are PvE only. They plan to tell the story and lore through contracts each season, which will be taken as a downgrade to the dedicated missions/strikes for story progression in Destiny.

If it's other extraction shooter players, they'll need to stand out from the biggest players in that genre with their own unique take. Escape From Tarkov is much more modern, realistic, and sweaty, so there's not much overlap there. Hunt Showdown might be the real competitor for them though, as it does its own seasonal lore storytelling and gives characters some abilities and has an overall slower pacing in its fights, mostly due to the limitations of weapons from the late 1800s.

And the one other thing that will probably be the biggest turn-off of all - faction progress and gear wipes with each season. People HATE having their progress wiped, especially Destiny players that have an extreme hoarding problem. In a PvP game like this where it'll probably be fairly quick to get a full loadout of maxed out gear, wipes are probably the most efficient way of refreshing things and letting new players catch up, but it's very hard to convince most people that resetting their progress regularly is a good thing for the game.
