I enjoy playing Rimworld though I only have ~100 hours logged in the game as I tended to get very invested in my save files and would let it consume a lot of my time which I stopped having as much of when I decided I wanted to work on career certifications and now kids. All of this is in vanilla (with a few mods) Rimworld and every time one of the expansions gets announced it makes me want to pick up all the previous ones and have some marathon Rimworld sessions. The changes coming in version 1.6 make even a new vanilla game sound exciting!

Very excited, as with every DLC, content from top mods gets absorbed. I have just queued up the 1.6 unstable patch and will play while I'm on a ferry crossing.

Yeah, you can now fish (from a mod), build heavy bridges that can act like supports to build structures on (from a mod) give build commands over existing structures to upgrade them (from a mod), there's 40 new animals (from mods), you can build a spaceship to live on (from a mod.) It's good for the game to have those things eventually filter out of the mod ecosystem and into the vanilla game, but they definitely do pick the favored concepts from popular mods to work on. Modders do all of the work conceptualizing and developing additions to the game, and Ludeon can charge $25 for polishing those concepts and releasing a DLC.

Incorporating popular QoL mod features into the base game is logical instead of continuing to rely on unpaid mod developers to maintain those features.

There have also been a ton of performance improvements (e.g., multithreading pathfinding, variable tick refresh rates for entities) that are coming to the base game for free that really can't be undersold.

Not to mention that, given how incredible RimWorld's mod community is, the devs would be hard pressed to ever come up with a new DLC that didn't already exist as a mod in some form.

I'm not saying it's not a good idea from Ludion's perspective. Centralizing control of modded features that many people find essential is beneficial to the long term health of the game. Not every addition is from a mod. There are such a variety of mods out there it would be hard to find areas for expansion that don't overlap with some of them. It all makes sense with regards to Ludeon's continued DLC releases and success as a company.

But do the modders get compensated by Ludeon? Probably not. And they knew that and signed up for it, but it still results in inequitable exchange between the two parties. Ludeon gets compensated, and the modders mostly don't. It's like a big tech company buying out a startup for their good idea, but the modder doesn't even get paid in the buyout.

I'm still going to buy the latest DLC, and add to the current 2,000 hours I have in the game, but I'm not kidding myself about who's being taken advantage of here.

At least one modder (the vanilla expanded guy) was paid by Ludeon as a contract employee for some of his work and is now "part of Ludeon."

I hope you don't get seasick playing it! I'm going to reinstall Rimworld sometime soon to try out the 1.6 additions.

A ferry crossing? So that'll let you create a tiny tiny village? You'll only have a ton of hours left to go after that! 😂

The replayability, particularly due to the absolutely insane number of mods, is just through the roof.

This? This is some next level rimming.... err... rimjob'ing.... ah, ok, rim worlding!

(Unrelated: there was formerly a rim.jobs domain that used to point to the blackberry company's, RIM's, job site. I remember looking up the ownership but... 😂😂😂😂)

As someone who has played Rimworld since alpha, I’ve never liked the travel system. I’m excited to see how gravships turns it on its head; the idea of a mobile base sounds like it could be super fun.

I've only skimmed the announcement, but it does look pretty good so far. It reminds me of another game I play: Space Haven. One of the reasons I like Space Haven is the ability to move around in the universe/galaxy, while still doing the colony management and infrastructure buildout.

So it's exciting that it'll be added to Rimworld. I should start a new game just to prep myself. I put a lot of time into Rimworld early last year, the most I've ever played a map, and the furthest I've ever gotten.

Biotech was the first DLC expansion that actually captured my enthusiasm, but this might be the second! I’m definitely excited for all the QoL improvements from the vanilla perspective too, but having recently loved the Space Age update/expansion to Factorio, I’m excited to see Rimworld’s take on a similar concept too!

I haven’t really been paying attention to Rimworld’s development recently, so thank you for sharing! I might have otherwise missed this!

Overall I don't mind that they occasionally heavily reuse existing mods ideas into a dlc as that gives a more consistent "base game" feel (so more easy to find people to share design ideas with). I do feel like the DLC are way overpriced, and I'm not sure how much compensation is sent to the original mods' makers.
