What is the anime Serial Experiments Lain?
A Jade Girl is jaded.
Summary (spoilers):
Hylic Layer: The Outer Lain ("Childish 玲音")
In a twilight world where the reckless creations of tech companies are alienating our youth, Lain Iwakura must decide whether she is merely their product or her own person.
Psychic Layer: The Inner Lain ("Advanced レイン")
A young woman, Alice Mizuki, is walking along with her fiancé when she spots a girl who reminds her of a dream she once had, a glimpse through the looking glass that prompted her to connect with and befriend her withdrawn schoolmate, Chisa Yomoda, back in 8th grade.
Pneumatic Layer: The Secret Lain ("Cunning Lain")
When we lose someone, be it a dying friend or even our childhood self, a person-shaped hole is left in the fabric of our reality. Lain is the fear and compassion that comes about when we fill that gap with our memories, our grief, and our coping mechanisms in a life that inevitably continues on. Lain is the pieces of ourselves that we see in others. Lain is the uncertainty and anxiety we experience in reconciling those oft disparate parts. She is no one, she is everyone, and she is only herself.
The Playstation game follows a similar triplicate breakdown, albeit with Toko Yonera taking the place of Chisa, and Lain as the emblem of Toko's psychological state. Somewhat similarly, Misato serves a narrative role that can be compared to Alice, and her shadow is Kyoko. As the observer, you are meant to contemplate and discover the following things depicted in the works:
I know it fits in with their theme of star names for their GPU architectures but I always wonder if someone at AMD's GPU architecture team also had Lain in mind when choosing the name Navi.

It's crazy to me just how well the show held up. Like the things it addresses with the internet are way ahead of its time and have become even more current day problems. A vast good amount of it...
It's crazy to me just how well the show held up. Like the things it addresses with the internet are way ahead of its time and have become even more current day problems. A vast good amount of it went over my head as a teenager, but it made me love it even more as an adult now being able to understand more of what it was going for. Which is rare, as my tastes have shifted enough that most of the anime I enjoyed back then is stuff I haven't enjoyed as an adult.
It was also crazy having Duvet liked on Spotify with it being at <1000 listens, and then oneday just seeing it balloon up to point of now over a billion because a sped up version became Tiktok famous - leading to a mostly irrelevant band getting back together after decades and going on a world tour. Just insane what can happen sometimes lol.
Also shout out to Haibane Renmei, a cute+emotional slice of life that also had character designs by ABe. Such a good artist.

Hello... Navi.
Serial Experiments Lain was the first anime I ever watched, and what a mind-fuck. It very much holds a special place in my heart.
<<Duvet>> intensifies
I don't think I understood even a fraction of what Lain was about but I don't regret the trip at all.
