Weekly LFG Post - 2018-07-12

So since we no doubt have many rpg gamers amongst us, I thought I'd start a weekly or bi monthly thread to post about looking for groups, looking for members and the like. So if you want to, why not come and make a post.

I myself happen to be looking for people who'd be up to play a spot of Shadowrun or preferably Cryptomancer.

I might potentially be up for some D&D 5 though.

And I've never heard of Cryptomancer. What's it like?

Edit: I started reading up on Cryptomancer and it looks like a high-fantasy hacking simulator. That's an interesting enough concept that I would be willing to try, but it seems more suited to a tactical game or board game than a pen and paper RPG.

It's entirely possible to run a game in the shadowrun setting, but substituting its actual system for GURPS, which has plenty of material on modern magic and cyberware.

Yeah, but doesn't GURPS have a lot of everything? I've never played it, but a friend who did described it as essentially a D&D 3.5-style mess of splatbooks.

Yeah? That's the idea, the system is designed to work in any setting, so you'll find material for just about any setting. FWIW though, speaking as someone who's not the biggest fan of 3.5 and pathfinder precisely because so much of the material is overcomplicated, poorly balanced, and shoehorned in to settings where DnD was not meant to go, GURPS does it a lot better, 'cause that's the intent of the system.

That's good to here. Does GURPS have editions or is it all compatible? Is there anywhere you would recommend stsrting in terms of understanding the system?

Yeah, current edition is 4th, but the changes from 3rd are pretty minor and you can use 3e sourcebooks almost unmodified in 4e games. Not that it'll probably come up though since 4e came out like...

I'd recommend giving GURPS Lite (pdf warning) a read. It's a cut down free version of GURPS that has everything you need for a basic non-magical game.

So yes I could definitely see Cryptomancer lending itself to a board game very, very well. But from running it myself as long as your group understands the basics of public key crypto and the like. It can very fun to actually run. Plus since it's an rpg, you can mix and match rules as you wish.

Incidentally if you are willing to try, as my group is currently on an indefinite hiatus, I'd love to get another group going on it.

I might be willing to try. I'm not really to commit to a campaign though.

Fair enough so that works fine honestly, Cryptomancer is meant to be played in a series of short arcs that tie together into a overarching narrative. So if you'd be up to try it we'd just need to...

Sure, is there anywhere in particular you would recommend getting the rulebook? I think I saw it on DriveThruRPG for like $10 which isn't bad at all

Gingivitis put together some home-brew rules to help out a bit and I employ a lot of these (especially the updated threats, I use a fraction of his narration aid ideas, but they're worth looking at) https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?817517-Shadowrun-Anarchy-Helpful-Fan-Made-Resources

Yeah SRA was great, what I played as well. Very story and player driven.

Yep all depends on the group, we've been roleplaying for almost a decade now so we're rather second hat at this.

What are people's experiences with online groups? I've had some interest in doing some casual role playing for a while, but I'm moving around a lot right now so irl groups aren't really viable.

I play online only, usually through roll20 or discord. Works great, just need a good group.
