Would anyone be interested in a Tildes-exclusive Minecraft server (again)?

We've had this conversation many times but the server was never set up or is no longer running.

Things to discuss:

  • Whitelisted, must share Minecraft username so we can tell who is who
  • Spigot with plugins
    • Nicknames of Tildes usernames
    • Anti-grief
    • Online map?
  • Lightweight mods, if you want
  • Which game version?
    • 1.12 if we want mods
    • 1.13.2 if we want vanilla

If around 5 people would be committed to this server, I'll set it up to the majority's preferences.

Regarding the whitelist: better an ounce of prevention than a pound of cure. Even if the map can be rolled back (or individual chunks rolled back if the mods are good and the tools are there) that's still more effort than whitelisting the individuals that show interest, and is a more unpleasant experience than submitting your name and waiting a little while to get added to the list.

I got the modpack working (see my previous comment), but I get lag spikes about every second for some reason. I suspect it's a result of either this bug, or some mod that is causing a similar issue. I believe it's the second one due to the fact that vanilla minecraft runs fine on my computer.

EDIT: So I spent like 20 minutes methodically enabling and disabling mods, and it looks like the journeymap mod could potentially be the cause of the issue, I'm not certain though.

I'm sure it's not a server issue for me, as it occurs in singleplayer games as well. Even just a superflat world with no mobs causes the same issues.

              https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/more-default-options

I'd second-guess Optifine as well. It rewrites huge portions of the rendering system which can hurt mod compatibility. It's probably okay with the current limited set of mods, but anything that adds fancy rendering is more questionable.

It's also not always a performance improvement for people. It's usually best to let people add Optifine themselves, if they're running a low-powered device.

I would add Foamfix though. It has very strong compatibility and few side effects. Note it includes its own defaults system, so that config should be disabled if using one of the defaults mods above: B:initOptions=false

              https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/foamfix-for-minecraft
              https://github.com/blay09/DefaultOptions/issues/25

The reduction in ram should help with some of the lag spike concerns raised elsewhere in this thread.

Configs (from the "configs" folder) should generally be the same across the client and server. The pack needs to include those, and will overwrite them during updates. But some mods will also generate a separate options file for individual preferences. Optifine happens to piggyback off the options.txt file, but others like JourneyMap will create their own options files in a directory under the instance root. That's where you can bundle additional defaults if you'd like.

                  Does that make sense?

Whilst I agree that we probably want a whitelist (and +1 for having nicknames of our Tildes usernames), I'm not sure that we need all the plots/land claiming plugins; they're just confusing and make it hard to find somewhere you can build, when hopefully we're all capable of avoiding trampling on other people's space.

Edit: In retrospect the only necessary thing is MultiMC which takes care of everything. No need to manually install Forge, and don't need the CMPDL Curse downloader since MultiMC handles that too.

On the other hand, it's very possible that you could make something which works better than the existing applications, which would be awesome :) e.g. there's plenty of space for a launcher that hooks into the vanilla launcher like the Forge installer does.

I never considered the game appealing enough to try playing alone, but maybe a Tildes server is a good opportunity to give it a try? The game mechanics is like 80% Stardew Valley 20% Fortnite right?

What I actually love the most about minecraft is redstone. You can build a computer with it. I think I still have somewhere a map where I started building redstone computer. I finished ALU (addition/substraction), but I got stuck at RAM, and never finished it.

Is it conductive? I saw some pics of impressive CPUs made in Minecraft before. I wonder how they make an SR latch

We're considering doing an automation-based modpack, but yeah pretty much.

Antigrief / various residence plugins - I don't think it'll be necessary. We can always add it if we need it, but I think it'd just annoy players. Especially if our playerbase will be strictly regulated, I think it would be better if we left out this kind of plugins.

I don't think large modpacks are really needed. Maybe something to speed midgame and make lategame more interesting, but I don't know - I stopped playing minecraft at version 1.9 and started playing again like two weeks ago, and so far I play only vanilla while learning what new minecraft offers. But if we add some mods, I'd love some lightweight ones, not some complete technic-like revamp of minecraft.

To clarify, I'm talking about a plugin/mod that allows chunks to be rolled back in case grief ever happens, and a container-locking system.

I think a modpack is a must. Nothing enormous but modpacks certainly extend the amount of content and, imo, fun that one can have in a server. Lots of QoL additions and more incentive to remain active

I think my experience with SevTech: Ages was around 70% waiting for it to load and 30% hoping it didn't shit itself/hoping my computer didn't CTD. Maybe a lighter modpack? (I'm fairly certain this...

So we ended up with a lighter modpack (list). Most mods are QoL changes, like Quark, Just Enough Resources, Furnace on a Stick, and so on.
