Ahoy is a youtuber I can't recommend enough. His series on iconic weapons and either specific game (franchises) or simply aspects of games are always very interesting and enjoyable to watch.

excellent video on the history of a weird video game trope. I'm half way through and just wanted to express my appreciation.

    I watched about 3 minutes.

The fault with this video that caused me to stop watching was: it didn't answer why I should watch the video. The title was non-descriptive and the description was basically empty. It started out basically listing a bunch of examples of exploding barrels in video games.

There wasn't any dialogue within those 3 minutes to explain what the objective of the video. For a 20 minute video, that's crucial to ensure that I am interest in spending that amount of time on a video. For all I know, it could have just continued listing a bunch of examples of exploding barrels in video games.

I want to give you some benefit of the doubt, and you have a point regarding a fairly long intro with no description… but I just re-watched the first 3 minutes and it's extremely clear this is a game design video, talking about the origins of explosive barrels. Scratching my head as to how you could have missed this. Did you say "3 minutes" generously and maybe just meant ~20 seconds?

Then again, as we were talking about here, this is patreon-style content that doesn't really care about clickbaiting you into being an ad-eyeball; so if it loses some people along the way, nbd.

Sorry, I first saw this thread on my phone and opened the video probably moments after it was posted (night before last, to me). The separation from trying to watch and posting the comment means the 3 minutes was pulled from memory, and opening the video again shows that I stopped just before 2 minutes. As I have it playing while I type this, I now see that it continues into Doom asking why does it have exploding barrels?

It would be a lot easier to commit to a long video from an unknown author if it described more up front. A description outlining the structure of the video and/or what the viewer is expected to learn from watching the video. Perhaps an introduction that does the same.

As I've continued to try to write this, the video has continued on and nearly at the end. I've been half listening. I think part of my issue was that, with my phone as the player, I had to commit all attention to something that I wasn't sure was going to be interesting. Now, as I'm on a laptop, I could let it play in a background tab of Firefox while I type this. I have more ability to divide my attention, and so I can be more forgiving.
