I have far too little experience to actually analyze this study, but I have enough biology knowledge to stumble through. The study is extremely small (n=3 humans), but was also replicated in mice. If this is accurate, we may be able to better understand how genetics cause ADHD. The paper also mentions possible medication that could target the root cause. With how many bullshit restrictions are placed around current ADHD medications, I will always be a proponent of new medications being developed.

To be fair, stimulants are kinda dangerous to be handing out to people who don't need them. And they're not always the correct answer. If you're bipolar, and also have ADHD, taking stimulants can trigger manic episodes that will make ADHD symptoms seem insignificant by comparison.

Almost all medications have health tradeoffs, and part of the reason we have doctors at all is to help establish if those tradeoffs are worth it.

And until COVID I had to go get 3 paper Rxs, and then drop them off 30 days apart (because the pharmacy wouldn't keep them) and pick them up in a timely fashion. Which, would have been great if I was already medicated at the time and hadn't forgotten to take them that day or forgotten to get the refill on time or any number of ADHD things.

For contrast, my prescription drug company (that my company chooses) is CVS Caremark, and mandates for maintainence medications (defined as more than 3 fills of same pill), they must be 90 day scrips, and they must be filled by CVS or mail order through CVS.

Fuck me if I want to choose a small pharmacist within walking distance. Gotta support the monopoly in the next town over or my pills triple or more in price.

Yeah, it is drug prohibition problems and health insurance problems. The DEA gets to decide who deserves stimulant medication. (PDF link) What is your point? These are the bullshit restrictions...

What is your point? These are the bullshit restrictions that the top commenter was referring to. They are not related to any medical concerns or medical professionals, but they restrict patients' access to medication in ways that the patients are often unable to address without those medicines. People with diabetes struggle to get life-saving medicine, but at least it isn't practically required by the pharmacy that they lower their blood sugar themselves before getting any insulin.

The Adderall is a drug Scheduling issue. I cannot imagine having to see my doc every month on top of everything else, so I guess I should be thankful it isn't worse.
