Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
My left knee, which has stopped me running since about August, is finally on the mend! Ran 5km without any pain yesterday. I was up to 40k a week before stopping though so I have a long road back to that… I kept up a lot of cycling in the mean time but the fitness doesn’t seem to fully translate
I’m getting married at the end of the month so Ive just trying to train consistently. I’ve got the Tonal workout mirror and I’ve cut way back on the beer. Feels great- just looking to shed those last 5lbs
This week hasn't been the best for me - just completely demotivated. However, last weekend I did an 18-mile day hike with 2k vert so that felt good. Really looking to start hitting the gym in two weeks though ahead of the new ski season. Will probably just fall into a PPL with some cardio mixed in.
Not too bad, all things considered. Got some easy 5K runs in and went swimming.
My biggest issue is consistency right now.
Same boat, especially when routine gets interrupted/shifted. My biggest thing is I put on the calendar what day it was supposed to be (legs, core, arms) and use that as my reminder of where to start when I run off.
Had some runs that felt really great in the last week! I’ve followed the garmin suggested workout and WOW the speeds felt horribly slow at first, but then I realised that I felt like I could pretty much run forever. My VO2 max is improving more quickly too. Who knew running painfully slow was the key?! (Apart from, you know, every running professional and seasoned runner un the whole world).
For my weight training I’ve not done much this week. An arthritis flare up in my wrist means I can’t hold the weights without pain. Thinking about getting some wrist weights - they don’t come in very heavy weight usually but it’s a little better than body weight at least, and will help me keep consistent
I truly need to listen to this run slow advice, I feel like I need some running mindfulness session when I run. Wonder if there's something like that? Glad to hear your getting good improvement on your VO2 max, keep it up
I've always (since I started running like 5-6 months ago) known about running slow to get faster. But I didn't realize how slow it meant till I was reading one of the Pfitzinger books and I was seeing that, for example, if you're aiming for a 10-minute mile in a marathon, your long runs should be at a 12:00 pace...and they should start out even slower than that! That's the guy who made basically the default plans for training for marathons. He's the one who's says your runs should be that slow. I would do my long runs at like 10:30 and think I was too slow. Running slowly (well, not fast) is the thing that enabled me to tolerate long runs. Running even slower feels like it will open up a whole new world for me.
It was so hard to stay slow at first! I’m glad I have the data about VO2 max to convince me it’s helpful otherwise I’d probably speed up. Well worth doing!
Something I’ve been doing for fast runs is to play albums which have the same BPM as my cadence at the speed I want. The music is terrible but the beat is helpful! You could try something like that for a slower run
It's been a pretty good week so far. Motivation and energy levels are feeling good. Though I am beginning to look forward to a lower volume block.
This morning I ran my 5k for that charity that I thought might have been a case of accidental fraud. First off, it is a not-for-profit--501(c)7--and not a nonprofit--501(c)3. That explains why it didn't come up when I searched the IRS's records of nonprofits. I don't understand why it is a not-for-profit instead of a nonprofit, but it seems to be such a tiny thing that I'll just attribute it to the lady not understanding the law and just doing the same thing for over a decade with no one correcting her because she started it after her son died. Pretending to not know what you're doing seems to be a decent way to commit fraud, but it seems like such a small thing that it probably doesn't make a difference and probably makes everyone's life easier to avoid the extra paperwork.
Edit: forgot to talk about the race 🤦
It was the first cold morning of the year, just over 40° F, which isn't really that cold but when it suddenly drops that low after being in the 90s constantly until earlier this week, it feels quite chilly. So I'm glad I got in a nice warmup before the race. I ended up getting a PR and finishing in probably something like 24:02. I thought there wouldn't be anyone fast and I'd have a chance of winning--there was a $100 cash prize--but when one guy passed me right at the start (I didn't even see him at the starting line), I knew the race was over; he beat me by about 5 minutes. I was satisfied with my time but not exactly proud because I came in at just over 24 minutes and I still had some energy left. I had a fun time overall though, and finished second in my age group, which probably says more about the race than my performance.
Honestly glad you got a PR, learned more about the organization and Don't forget your raffle prize?!?!
