The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adult women and men drink at least 91 and 125 ounces of water a day, respectively. (For context, one gallon is 128 fluid ounces.)

And now that I see it expressed in these units... this looks high. The recommendation I've seen is only 2 litres per day.

But some research shows that the recommendation is to drink about 2.1 litres per day for women and 2.6 litres of water per day for men. The 2.7-litre and 3.7-litre figures are closer to the amounts required for total ingestion of water, including water ingested in food, not just water drunk on its own.

I could swear 2 liters was also the recommended amount where I am from. One thing in your link that wasn't obvious to me was how they calculated the daily total average. If they are calculating it from just average size, it could be that a larger amount of overweight and obese, or an ageing population, could drive up the average requirement. Thats speculation on my side though.

The “pop science” idea of always drinking water or aiming for a certain water intake has always smelled like bullshit to me. I drink when I’m thirsty. During times of strenuous activity I get thirsty more quickly. It’s like our body has a feedback mechanism for telling us when we need more water.

when I first started training Muay Thai in the Texas heat. I found myself getting delirious and light headed halfway through warm ups. I was told I was dehydrated and need to drink more water throughout the day. Long story short, only drinking water when I'm thirsty was not good enough, chugging water within an hour before class was not good enough and actually made me throw up once. I had to drink a steady amount of water throughout the day.

Though I tend to sweat more than your average person and doing strenuous training probably is an edge case for most people anyways.

I'd say, while it may be some dehydration, you could also be under-salted. You could have been missing some (or a lot of) potassium and magnesium.

But it's true that sometimes, or for some people, it's hard to realize one is thirsty. Maybe it sounds stupid, but it happens to me, maybe because I'm more inside my mind than in touch with my body, and I don't usually carry water with me. Then I wonder why am I getting a strong headache, and realize I haven't drank anything for hours.

Dogpiling: at the end of a hard ride I am often extremely thirsty because of getting in “the zone” and not hydrating properly.

The take-home message isn’t that people should drink less water, nor that they should swap out water for other beverages.

I think it's more trying to change how we take water in. Generally, water absorption is best with food, for example.

Also, salt intake. Not Sodium, but focus on making sure you're getting adequate potassium and magnesium in your diet.
