Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
In the past month I have gotten my act together with fitness. I downloaded and bought the premium subscription for LoseIt, and have been tracking every calorie consumed. I switched from regular full sugar cola to Zevia. I quit eating pizza, quit eating the curly fries with the boneless wings, and have been home cooking my meals everyday. The benefit of this app is the ability to see trends in my macros over time. My goal lately has been to increase my daily protein intake. My goal for protein is 120 grams which is really hard to hit some days if I am not mindful of my meal macros. Not sure how the other macros impact weight loss and physique, so I still have a good deal of learning to do since I often eat high fat meals. Overall though, I'm running a deficit of ~700 calories with the assumption that my daily calorie burn will reach at minimum 2400.
To help with that, I ordered a pull up bar to do a pull up or two every time I walk through the door, as well as incline push ups and dips if I take it off the door. Started my yoga routine back up and have been doing those workouts 6 days a week. I need to incorporate a long bike ride once a week as well as some distance running a couple of days a week, but I'm not in too big a rush to do those things. But I have been getting a nice amount of walking in every day.
Its been 28 days or so and have lost 8 pounds. My goal is to lose ~7 more pounds of fat before I work my way up to maintenance and/or building muscle. If I come out of this with better habits, I will consider it a win.
That's a good pace! In my experience, that's maintainable for a couple of months before you hit a bit of a wall, and then the weight loss is slower. Of course, your mileage may vary.
Do you make protein shakes? I'd recommend MyProtein's Impact Whey Protein powder, if you're looking for a cheap and effective source. 2 scoops in ~12oz. of water and you got 36 grams of protein in 200 calories. Be aware: the list price is pretty much false. They're always running "sales", so the 11lb. bag (for example) usually runs ~$60-65.
Getting so desperate to lift heavy things, but don't have a lot of space, that I may pay one of the price gougers out there that have scooped up all the adjustable dumbbells on the market.
Have you checked with local gym and fitness supply stores? You might be able to get them to give you a ring when they get stock in.
Haven't thought about gyms, I wonder if I could talk to my gym about ordering a pair for me. They let me freeze my account indefinitely, so they've been great to me.
Unfortunately, most local sporting goods in the area are chains or specifically do not carry weight training equipment.
I feel ya. I had just started doing compound lifts at the gym on the regular before the pandemic hit. Looked into buying some stuff to use at home, but fitness equipment is so damn expensive.
It is! It's weird because it's just a bunch of iron. Should just buy a bag of cement, put on my shoulder and squat away.
There were a lot of people training with sandbags in /r/weightroom
I bought a 24kg kettlebell. It's fun, but makes me miss the barbell and dumbbells even more.
Yeah, I had been doing compound lifting for almost five years until everything got shut down.
And you're right, prices are crazy right now. I remember looking at getting something like the Bowflex dumbbells for my home just for fun. I could find them used for $200, but decided why spend the money when I already have a gym membership. Now you're lucky if you can find a pair for less than $600.
I’ve been keeping up with Ring Fit Adventure with a few days off here and there when I’m doing other activities (biking, running, etc). I play about an hour of real time (30 minutes on the in-game timer). My arms and shoulders feel a lot stronger, which is awesome! My knees are not terribly happy with the squats, so I’ve kept those to a minimum.
I have a pull-up bar with me and I've slowly been getting back into the groove with it. When I started, I was able to get 3 maybe 4 pull-ups. I've now graduated to doing 2 sets of 6 twice a day. Once over lunch, and once after work. I start with wide grip for the first set, and second set is chin ups. I feel much stronger now that I did when I started, and (although it might be my imagination) I think my back is looking meatier too!
Eventually, I'll get back to running with my "step-dogter" after work as well. I've taken a little break that turned into a longer break because of laziness. She needs it though, she's a little energizer bunny.
Starting to get back some of my running endurance. Running about 5-6 miles in ~2 mile chunks 3-4 times a week for the past few weeks. Eventually, I'd like to be able to do that distance without any breaks.
