As a (former for now at least) LARPer, I know folks like this, I am folks like this. Waking up Sunday after not enough water, not enough sleep, being up late fighting with foam swords and having to pack and clean a cabin is the worst. And also I loved it. It's exhausting and painful and the joy of the moment especially when you can entertain folks makes up for it, until your body thinks it doesn't.
I am particularly amused that they rotate queens every year. Anyway, Hip Hip Huzzah for the King and all

It was what was around (when I started I could play six weekends in a row sometimes due to number of chapters). Light touch foam weapons are still around.
But Google says Darkon exists still. I don't live anywhere near that group so I don't know anything about it. There's a student org on campus here that's Belegarth affiliated (combat focused medium touch I think). I was always more into the roleplay.

The article is fairly great, really enjoyed the presentation but there was one (1) line that absolutely left me in hysterics, and certainly not what the author intended: I'll just leave it at that.

To recover, he will play the online fantasy game “Skyrim” and “wait for the pain to pass.”
I used to be an adventurer like you—then I took a few hundred hours of Skyrim to the knee. Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Here's a little Heimskr in your eye!

Foam swords? Is Darkon still a thing then?

Mirror, since there is still a registration wall, even with gifted articles on WaPo:

Fwiw I tried it in an incognito window and it didn't require a login or an email address. Idk why there's a difference

Thanks for this! I almost gave up on reading it because of the paywall/tracking wall
No, a mirror always makes sense, I just even tested it and am annoyed. At WaPo, not you.

I wonder if that was the writer or if he said he'd "play games online or like Skyrim" or something 😅

It's not an online game.
Hmmm... what if he only ever played Skyrim via Stadia or some other online service?
