Has Tildes attracted any runners?

If so, what'd you run today? Any C25K folk?

At least one! I'm an ultrarunner from the middle of the country, in recovery from the Ice Age Trail 50 mile. My next planned outing is the Superior Fall Trail Race (50 mile distance).

My first few races did not go quite as well as I'd hoped and it's really taken the wind out of my sails. Ice Age in particular broke my heart. Currently struggling with really, REALLY enjoying not running. This year was gonna be a "big year," one where I created a long-range plan and committed to it. But a planned week off has now turned into a month (aided by an injury). I've had more time with my wife, with friends, going fishing, mushroom hunting, and just generally enjoying some downtime after several years of really dedicated running. It's hard to realize just how much the rest of one's life goes out the window when trying to make running a priority. I went out for a short (4 miles) jaunt this weekend and it felt like doing cocaine I enjoyed it so much, and yet, I'm still struggling to rekindle my motivation.

So, long story short, yes, Tildes has a runner! Maybe even two.

Damn, lots of millage! I suppose there really isn't nothing wrong with taking a break after that much distance running, right?

Although - maybe this is a good place to ask - I'm unsure of what kind of shoes to buy. I've had some pair I got off Amazon years ago, but they don't feel awesome for running. I just kinda don't know where to start with shoes and I feel like going into a store someone is going to try to up-sell me.

The shoes you should aim for depend on the prominence of your arches. Basically, if you have flat feet, you'll probably need some arch support. If you have normal arches, regular shoes will do. And if you got superpowered arches, you'll probably be fine with regular shoes, but there are shoes for that type of feet too.

The arch of your foot often guides how much pronation you're likely to unconsciousnessly have while you run. The goal should be to have the foot turn very slightly inward on each stride, with virtually no knee movement side-to-side as you run. With high arches or flat arches, a runner is more likely to under or over-pronate as they run, which can lead to knee damage with all that side-to-side stress.

Get a price range from a few different places and see what you can get. I got my recent pair for $80 and they've been great. $100+ isn't bad, I was really desperate as my feet just hurt so much in my old shoes.

Your form has to be good and it has taken me some years to get it right but it has drastically increased my effeciency and all around enjoyment.

A few weeks ago, I tried on some Asics Gel Kayanos (I think that's what they're called) as part of a secret shopper thingy (buy them, return them, anonymously review the entire experience). They were the most comfortable running shoes I've even worn. I was blown away. Every day I'm running now I'm thinking about those Kayanos. In fact, when I hit the 10km milestone, I think I'll treat myself to a pair.

Found a running shop near me that has a no-questions 30-day return policy so long as they are like-new.

Getting actual running shoes (and thick-ish running socks!) was a game changer. It's just so much better on my feet and knees.

I've never so much as tried on a pair of Brooks but they seem to be regarded as the duck's nuts when it comes to "proper" running. How are they working out? The problem I have with my current runners is just how fast the sole seems to wear down. I've done <=400k in them (on concrete & bitumen, admittedly) at the very most, and the soles are, well, not exactly bald, but if they were car tyres they'd not be street legal. I'd hate to think that a shiny new expensive pair of runners is going to last me only another 2 months. Surely your Brooks are holding up better than that?

Oh, and I came across another game changer that blew my tiny little mind the other day, and has further improved my running experience: lacing techniques. Who would've thought?!

EDIT: I ran for ~25 minutes today, to answer OP.

The best thing to do is not get discouraged and keep coming back to it even if you take a planned or unplanned break.

I love running and try to do a marathon a year. I'm only doing light running right now, but still ramp up soon.

I try to get 6 or 7 runs in per week. Usually between 3k and 5k each. Its a coping mechanism for me. Its not about speed or competition but more about keeping the habit going.

I've been running pretty regularly for years. I ran 3.5 miles today (a bit over 5k), same as yesterday. I'll probably let tomorrow be a rest day and come back Wednesday for another 3.5. There are a bunch of trails near my place that let me hit that point pretty neatly, and I can't stand running loops. I never seem to run as long as I set out to on those (mentally deciding "that's enough" the second or third time past my car.)

Last november i did something quite unhealthy. I wanted to start running again since i used to run crosscountry in school and remember it fondly for some reason, but i was also very depressed and wound up looking forward to running every day.

The first day I played it sensible and tried to figure out how in shape i was and I did 2km in 30 mins!!!! Shockingly bad and i kept having to stop to catch my breath. Second day I decided to just keep running until I'd done 5k, even if i needed to stop a bunch. And i got a 46 minute time and felt like i'd died. Same again the next day with a lower time.

Kept that up for like 16 or so days with a running app and watching my pace change was fascinating. But downside with being depressed is that (at least for me) I didn't care about keeping myself well fed(1-2 pot noodles per day), so by the end of it I was aching all over and I almost tore a ligament (i remember how the cold ramp up feels that i got while stretching) so i just noped out and for the next month there were certain positions my leg would be in that would just feel perilously painful.

I've been taking care of myself for a while now so I'm more than ready to dive back into it and finally get a sub30 time (33:03PB) but now i've got the issue of not having the time to commit to it. And for my kind of bad brain, it only really works if i actually commit to it and minimize on rest days. There's also not a chance in hell I'll be caught running in summer unless I actually want to die. I was overheating enough during the winters as it was

I’ve always done some light running, but lately I’ve been trying to improve on my endurance and speed because i’m planning to join the Army and it’s the one thing i really don’t want to fall behind on in boot camp or in PT tests. So far I can only do somewhere between 3/4 of a mile or a mile and a half. I don’t use C25K but i usually try to map my routes and gauge the distance on google maps to get a rough idea of what how far I’d be running.

I made it through the C25K program last summer, but fell out of running due to various life things. Started getting back into it more recently. It was going well up to 3.75k, but now I'm having issues. Managed 3.75k once or twice without a problem, and then the next one I started getting knee pain that I think is ITBS, but I'm not sure (outside left knee, just below the joint). Pain stuck around maybe two days. No major increase in distance, no obvious worn spots on the soles of my Brooks Launch runners. The only thing I can think of is that between the last good and the first bad is that I wore dress shoes for the first time in a while, and for a long time (wedding + afterparty), which have a much higher heel than my normal Vans and OluKai flip flops (they have arch support).

I gave it ~2 weeks off and tried running again last night, planned for only 2km. Started feeling a hint shortly after 1k, had to give up and walk by 1.5-1.75k. I guess I'll wait maybe a month this time, do some daily walking to keep it moving at least. Any advice for recovery and long term?
