Whoo! That really sucked me in. What a story. I can’t help but wonder if improving the road would have a long term positive or negative impact on this little community.

This has to be one of the better videos I've seen this year, just wow. Just utterly fascinating and inspiring.

Yeah, same. Great investigative work, and talk about dedication! Funding two expeditions in order to finally reach the location is kinda crazy. Spoiler I kinda feel bad for the villagers though,...

      Spoiler

I kinda feel bad for the villagers though, and I can totally understand their apprehension when the expedition arrived there... Since more people knowing they're up there now may invite trouble, especially since they're an ethnic minority in that region, having migrated there from a neighboring one.

The ethics of contacting remote and isolated communities like that is always touchy, since the results are often incredibly unpredictable. So as much as I enjoy the video, I really hope Vox hasn't just accidentally set off a series of unfortunate events for those villagers.

But, the villagers did seem pretty happy to tell their story after trust was established. And they do have trade with neighboring communities, so it's not as if they were deliberately trying to hide from the greater world. It felt similar to running into an Amish community or something similar in America. Nothing really crazy to see here, just a remote community trying to carve out a life.

Yeah, true. But sending a few people out to trade with surrounding villages (the closest of which is supposedly 8km away) is not quite the same as now having everyone know exactly where your village, which is clearly doing well for itself and on incredibly fertile land, is located.

Who knows, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I think it's a legitimate concern. And historically, contact with isolated villages like this has typically not ended very well for those villages... not necessarily because of armed conflict, but because even just exposing those villages to modern technology and conveniences can often lead to a lot of the younger villagers leaving it.

So I wonder if Vox consulted with an ethicist, local diplomat, or some other expert familiar with those issues before they released this video. I hope they did.

I definitely see the concern, and I caught myself thinking that during the middle and the end portions of the video. But I was also wondering if that concern came from an anglicized view of the situation, in that this is a remote tribe of uncontacted people that need protecting from the greater world. But it turns out that they just migrated from another community because of population density. Then again, that migration caused them to become an ethnic minority, so I know it's not as simplistic as I may be making it out to be.

I hope they did too, though I'm not seeing anything specific in the credits. They may have just gone with their collective guts on this one.

Fascinating video. I do hope this won't expose the village to outside influences too much, it seems like they've got a good thing going there.
