I am an introverted, “socially challenged” female scientist. I’ve received amazing mentorship. Partly my field has a strong culture of mentorship. The things I’ve done to help myself mostly boil down to being openly mentorable. I ask questions, I actively avoid trying to appear like I know it all. I express enthusiastic interest in how people I admire do what they do and get where they are. I say my ideas and ask for feedback. I treat people more advanced than me with respect, but also as equals. I’m not resistant to learning from people more junior to me. I talk nice about everyone and I help everyone.

Hi Tidemonians, I’m one of those people who disappeared. My departure was unnoticed as it followed my habit of posting very little! But this morning I thought I’d check in and saw this thread and tasted a sweet drop of relief from my general sense that the internet (read: world) is just dreadful. I might need to spend more time with you lovely Tilders.

This is a tricky issue. As a research scientist, my, nearly exclusive, motivation to review is “because I should”. When I am desperate to move my own publications, not to mention funding, forward, this moral obligation is just not sufficient. I’m not sure what the solution is, but government funding to pay reviewers would be an interesting option.

I have taught at both community college and large 4-year university. However, (though I love teaching) my primary career focus is research. So the university route was a no-brainer in my case. It looks like you have done a thorough and responsible job of acquiring and comparing the hard data. I cant think of much that you haven't considered especially since you have some experience in both types of institution. At that point, it really comes down to heart stuff. Can you feel an inward tug? Does your partner have a strong leaning? If one of the opportunities was suddenly unavailable, which one would hurt more to lose? Of course I cannot predict the future or outcomes of specific scenarios, but my sense is that the CC work shouldn't lock you out of university opportunities in the future. When evaluating faculty recruits at my university, a stint in community college just makes me think, this person is passionate about teaching. Also, although the decision feels enormous, ultimately if it doesn't work out like you thought, you can change almost certainly change course with out much loss. Best of luck, I am pulling for you!

This is cool. So it seems like the old “moon navigation” theory is sort of right. But insects use light from the sky is an indicator of “up”. So if you tilt your top toward the light, you will on average tend toward the light source if it is not, in fact coming from true the sky.

I had one kid in a hospital due to mild complications during labor, and two at home with a midwife. I found unmedicated birth to be painful and difficult but not excruciating or awful. The home births were far more to my liking. BUT I live a short drive to a hospital if things went wonky (like with the first). Everyone’s experience is different. I like what the author seems to be getting to: how about dropping the judgement (natural birth movement) and the control (the doctor will take over now, Dear) and let the “birthers” do what seems best to them?

Every time I have to do this, I comfort myself with the idea that our pets’ short lives relative to ours is a blessing for them. From their perspective we are practically immortal. We are there for them their whole lives. They (usually) never have to face losing us. We have the pain instead of them and that is a gift to our furry family members.
