Voting on suggestions for the name of this group.

Tags: meta

Following this previous thread in which we shared our suggestions for the name of this group, you can now vote for your preferred name(s) on Survey Monkey.

Voting is by ranking. You will be presented with a list of 8 suggested names. You need to drag-and-drop these names into your preferred order, from top to bottom. (After you've dragged one name into place, the list will then number itself and you can manually number each option if you don't like dragging-and-dropping.) Put the name you like best at #1, the name you like second-best at #2, the name you like third-best at #3, and so on to the end of the list.

If you do not like an name and do not want to vote for it at all, tick the "N/A" box beside it. This will remove it from your submitted vote and give it a zero weighting in the count.

The names will be displayed in a random order for each person.

Make sure you click on "DONE". "OK" is only the first step. You must submit your response by clicking
"DONE" or it won't be counted.

Vote counting will be done automatically by Survey Monkey. The algorithm allocates a weighted number of votes to each option, based on its order in your list. If you vote for all 8 names by preference, your 1st preferred name will receive a weighting of 8, your 2nd preferred name will receive a weighting of 7, your 3rd preferred name will receive a weighting of 6, and so on to to your 8th preferred name which will receive a weighting of 1. Here is an explanatory video for anyone who's interested.

The survey prevents multiple responses from the same device. However, I've set it to "anonymous" so that IP addresses are not included in the results (why would that even be an option?).

Here is the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZKD76FS

Happy voting!

It'll be open a few days. Probably 3 days, because after that the thread will drop out of visibility on the common default sort of "Activity, last 3 days" - so there'll be no point keeping it open...

The result will be announced after that.

the inability to tie these like you can with most actual ranked choice voting tools is mildly annoying, because honestly most of them are on the same rung to me. a fairer assessment of my take would probably be ~lgbt > ~lgbtplus > ~queer > ~gsm = the other ~lgbt variants tied on one rung > ~rainbow, but i didn't input it that way obviously because that's evidently not possible.

That sounds a lot like score/range voting, where you basically give everything a 0-9 number (which is the score, not a rank), you can give whatever value in the range to whatever you want....

For those who want to learn more about score/range voting. Edit: See one, two, and three for evidence supporting the fact that score/range voting is objectively the best voting methodology.

We've had 37 people vote on this so far. That's a good start, but we need more.

That's surprisingly low. There are more comments in your original discussion thread than there are votes for the actual decision! What vote threshhold would we need before we can comfortably say...

What vote threshhold would we need before we can comfortably say it's representative?

I've done a quick review, and there were only 20 participants in that thread (not counting Deimos). Even at 37 votes, nearly twice as many people have voted as discussed it.

Buggered if I know! I'm no statistician. :)

That said, we're now up to 61 votes, which I'm much happier with.

And now that sort is All-time as default again, we aren't really limited to a 3 day time period anymore either. So if we feel the number of votes isn't sufficient after the 3 days you initially decided on, we can always just keep it going and bump it occasionally over the next week.

            I had considered that.

We need to keep in mind that the value of "7232 subscribers" shown in the sidebar is a bit misleading. Most of those subscribers are people who signed up for Tildes while it was private, took a look around, and didn't come back - but who were automatically subscribed to all groups when they signed up and are still subscribed because their accounts still exist even though they're not being used. Then there are the people who sign up for Tildes nowadays, and are still automatically subscribed to all groups, but don't bother to unsubscribe. We've got "zombie" subscribers and "invisible" subscribers.

There really aren't that many active people here in ~lgbt (which reflects the low active population across Tildes in general).

So, we shouldn't expect thousands or even hundreds of people to vote on this. If we were going to use an arbitrary cut-off, I'd aim for a 1% turnout on this. If 1% of 7,232 people - 72 people - vote on this, I'll be content.

Also, the results I've been seeing so far are clear, consistent, and not ambiguous. There's not a lot of scope for future members of this group to complain that, if we had let a few more people vote on this now, the result would have been different.

            (FYI: @kfwyre)

EDIT: Typos and minor wording fixes.

We're up to 76 responses now (which is a few more than when I checked a day ago).

Excellent. When are you planning on sharing the results? (No rush or anything, I'm just using this as an obligatory bump.)

haha I'm planning to give this thread one last bump on Monday morning, USA/Canada time. I'll wait a day or so after that, then close down the survey and publish the results.
