Who are your LGBTQ heroes/role models?
- Who are the LGBTQ individuals you look up to or admire?
- In what ways do you find them inspiring or admirable?
- Has their example and influence helped you in your own life? If so, how?
Don't feel like you have to talk about someone famous: plenty of LGBTQ heroes are the people we know personally, and I would love to hear those kinds of stories. Also, feel free to include people who don't identify as LGBTQ but who still fit the criteria of a role model/hero for the community (e.g. Judy Shepard, Jonathan Larson, a supportive straight sibling, etc.).
Stephen Fry. He is my favorite person in the world. His openness about his sexuality and mental illness (bipolar disorder), as well as his intelligence, sense of humour, charm, and passion for language, nature, science & technology, etc. are all things I admire greatly about him.
For those unfamiliar with him, here are a few short clips to introduce you to him that you might enjoy:
The Joys of Swearing
Kinetic Typography - Language
QI | Poking Fun At Stephen
Stephen Fry on God | The Meaning Of Life
Shagged by a rare parrot | Last Chance To See
And here are a few longer form ones that I think are absolutely fantastic and well worth watching:
(the first one is especially relevant to this topic since it's a documentary on homophobia)
BBC | Stephen Fry: Out There | Episode 1 - Episode 2
BBC | The Secret Life Of The Manic Depressive | Part 1 - Part 2
Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson | Stephen Fry - Special "no audience" episode with 30min interview
I'm almost surprised you didn't also link to his video on free software: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_mS4CIXcLY.
I really like Stephen Fry. He's the person I believe I would have been if I were born in the UK.
I didn't link it because, while I knew Mr. Fry was a huge technology and computer enthusiast, I had not actually seen that video before and was not aware he was a fan of opensource software. But now that I have and am aware, I am even more in love with him! :) Thanks for sharing that.
I had no idea she'd released an album under a different artist name! Just a couple of weeks ago I thought to myself that we were overdue for a new Against Me! album, so hopefully this will scratch that itch. Against Me! has been a long-time favorite of mine, so thanks for putting her new work on my radar.
I also haven't read her book yet, but that's only because my library hold hasn't come in yet. Too many people in front of me in line!
