Well... I mean its Hungary. At this point, after the antisemitism, racism, the destruction of a democratic process in favor for a strong-man-leader, its right wing militia supporting police activity, its oppression of journalists and on and on - it sort of feels kind of like they are just getting a full set at this point more than anything. A sort of "fascist gotta catch 'em all" scenario.
Yeah, this feels like they were reviewing all they've done and just realized they missed the whole "hey, these incredibly vulnerable people still have rights" line item and had to knock that out....

Anyone know of any organizations that help get lgbt individuals out of there?

I think getting out of Hungary isn't that complex (still tricky tho) since they are an EU member still, so they don't need help with that - the issue is more a question of how to improve the lot...

It's fascinating how strongmen pick on those most oppressed and denigrated through no fault of those people to support their ego-driven hunger for power. Putin does the same thing with gays: it's...

Putin does the same thing with gays: it's not like he has that much to say against gays: they're just a convenient group to make a public enemy out of.

I always wonder if FIDESZ's voters regret voting for dictatorsip lite(?) or at least believe in democracy or equality but these polls on post-war Germans' regret of Hitler have me fully convinced fascism is a natural (≠good) and inevitable reaction to equality and they're OK with repealing these rights and their democracy if it means they get to stay in top.

I truly believe that the narrative that Orban et al provide can only come on the heels of a real or perceived threat to "normal life". Handling that narrative is what is needed to be on top, AND people love a strong leader, hard rules and well defined social order, as long as the strong leader is like them, the rules are things they already do and demand no sacrifice, and the social order is one they feel they have a good position in already (not actually have, but FEEL they have).
Most of us are fine with all this as long as tomorrow will be sort of like today and food is on the table. Creating a scary alternative is also relevant. Something that the "other" prefer, presented as something scary, dangerous and problematic.
It's why every generation balks at the new generations ideals when they come with new rules, no matter how small.

With issues of sexuality and gender identity, once you're out you're out. You can't go back in the closet for your own protection if your family & coworkers know you're gay or if you're mid-transition or whatever else. When these backslides happen it's arguably more devastating than if the progress had never happened in the first place because it puts so many vulnerable people in very real danger of further persecution and violence. Violence from the people around them and violence from the state.
This is horrible, and a reminder that progress is not guaranteed nor is it linear. Trans rights are human rights and they are a matter of life and death. We cannot budge a single inch when people start coming for those rights.
