Most likely caused by the much higher barriers for gay couples to have kids. Still pretty cool though!

They mentioned that, and another possible factor, in the article.

Our data did not enable us to pinpoint the specific reasons why same-sex-parented children tend to outperform their peers. The literature, however, offers some plausible theoretical mechanisms.

For example, it could be because same-sex couples face more substantive barriers to parenthood (including social scrutiny, greater costs of conceiving a child and legislative hurdles) and overcoming these barriers may strengthen their commitment to parental roles.

Combined with the fact same-sex couples face minimal odds of becoming parents through accidental pregnancies, this can result in more positive parenting practices.

Maybe I’m too cynical, but I think it’s more likely that the system filters out worse parents rather than refines them until they meet the requirements.

I agree. I think the study’s methodology would be strengthened by comparing the children of same-sex parents to those who were adopted, conceived in vitro, or born from a surrogate pregnancy by opposite-sex parents. (Basically, children who were realllly wanted by parents who were willing to pay big money and jump through a lot of hoops.)

I have a strong feeling that the school outcomes would then be equal. The greatest single advantage a child can have is having parents who will love them enough to move heaven and earth and more to have and raise them.
