I think the study’s methodology would be strengthened by comparing the children of same-sex parents to those who were adopted, conceived in vitro, or born from a surrogate pregnancy by opposite-sex parents. (Basically, children who were realllly wanted by parents who were willing to pay big money and jump through a lot of hoops.)
I have a strong feeling that the school outcomes would then be equal. The greatest single advantage a child can have is having parents who will love them enough to move heaven and earth and more to have and raise them.
