Hmm I can’t think of anything that happened in 2016 that might have had a world wide stage and had a constant stream of negativity towards women. What could it be?!?

The article is about the UK and they say it's Brexit?

in the younger age cohorts, a greater proportion of women than men were committed to staying in the EU in 2017 and 2019. This may account for the emergence of the gender gap in party support.

Brexit was a much bigger screw-up in terms of policy than anything Trump did. The Economist would like to support the Tories (must have loved Thatcher but they were founded to oppose Disraeli’s corn law) but has no respect for them now.

Women seemed to turn against the Republicans in the 1980s which was when (a) abortion became politicized and (b) there was the big transition from southern whites voting democrat (Lincoln!) and blacks voting Republican (Lincoln!) to it being the other way around.

I remember the Reagan years being moderate in that right-wing Reagan was opposed by Tip O’Neil and the Democratic party was fairly unified but by Bush I, Southern Democrats we’re lining up with the Republicans and by Clinton most of the Southern Democrats were gone.

There is a long history of conservative women: Ben Disraeli told a leftist once that women would be his greatest obstacle, suffragettes organized for Prohibition and voted for Harding when they got the votes, and there was that strange case of Phyllis Schlafly.
